Don't see how this could have gone any other way really, how would other members deal with the threat or aftermath if it happened to them?

I'm First Aid trained but I don't want to treat anything like that! I just hope I'd be able to deal with it. AcBC all the way and mobile phone is your best mate.

How many of us have the local A&E and Gardai on Speed Dial? I do now!
I also have my In Case of Emergency number saved (ICE) in case I'm "out" and paramedics need to contact my wife.

Easy steps to take to being more prepared, like a small first aid kit in the car and something a bit more comprehensive at home. Learn how to use it takes a couple days with your local Order of Malta or Fire Service. Well worth doing for anyone, especially so for those involved in contact Sports :)

I agree, they did the best they could in a bad situation. She brandished the weapon and was prepared to use it. They did their best in a bad situation.

Man that was nasty. At least they didn't shoot her.

    A bit unfortunate that.

I remember seeing a documentary about an incident in the UK that was very similar to the Abbeylara incident over here. A mentally ill man with a smaurai sword was walking through his housing estate loooking for his mother, who could calm him. The cops kept her away (for her safety, even though she had dealt with similar incidents with him before), and then shot and killed him, apparently after warning him 3 or 4 times they were going to. He hadn't attacked them and was in no state to understand their commands. It sparked a huge debate on the use of non-lethal weapons.

Interestingly enough, cops in the US are considered to be at the forefront of non-lethal force in situations like this, considering the reputation they get over here, which is mostly media fuelled I think.

I guess the lesson is: Don't pull knives on cops.

I'm glad none of the police officers were stabbed. It's a pretty tough job – dealing with lunatics like that. It was an unfortunate accident, but if you start brandishing a knife, they have go to do something about it. In my opinion they went very light on the lady, they could have easily shot her (luckily no one was killed).

Yeah that is a bit weird... the Hollywood effect as well i think!!!

Odly enough, Guy Mezger, who is now a police officer, recently had to fire on a man wielding a knife.

Cool clip. I think it's all they could have done. Roper is correct in what he says. The US cops usually only use lethal forve as a last resort and will do almost everything to resolve the situation. Unlike in Ireland were they shoot guys in the back. Abbeylara!!

nice take down, even if it was a sport one (rugby, american football) still functional though

Good job by the cop who took her down, fast acting, no hesitation & probably saved the woman from taking a bullet from the other cop.
