Ok im not that too fussy so here goes :p

Looking for the best car (will be my first) with a max CC of 1600 for insurance and expense purposes.

Would like leather, a/c, power windows, sensor parking etc with a max budget of ~ €20k (less is always better :))

Do like the current model Volvo S40 in 1.6 petrol or 1.6 deisel also.

This seems perfect but a wee BIG bit over the budget: http://www.carzone.ie/usedcars/index.cfm?fuseaction=car&carID=426755

    Any input/pointers ?

    Thanks

    do you need back doors?

Are you only learning to drive?

If so I'd go for something much cheaper/smaller just to ease yourself in and so it's not as big a deal if you pick up any little dings or anything.

nice car plug. should be able to be bought for €18,500 to €19,000, no Aircon though

Spending up to 20k on your first car is frankly nutz. Do as wise and mean folk do buy a 5-10 year old good value car with high spec for 3-6 grand.

Something like a Fiesta 1.25 Ghia for example.

    http://www.carzone.ie/usedcars/index.cfm?fuseaction=car&carID=396724

    Or a ...pause....Renualt Laguna

well tbh id go for a gold if i was to see one with all the kit i would like in it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

you can fit leather to any Golf for €2500. might make your search a bit easier

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,465 ✭✭✭✭cantdecide

you won't get many leatherclad pimpmobiles in 1.6. mini is nice. but arguably, if you have €20k burning a hole... fuel economy can't be such a big factor. would you swing a Z3 ot TT for that kind of money?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,523 ✭✭✭optiplexgx270

1.6 is the max engine size ill go for insurance reasons Like this http://www.carzone.ie/usedcars/index.cfm?fuseaction=car&carID=426477 but would never buy it.

And leather isnt the main item im not dead set on it but would be nice to have. Would like parking sensors, climate control and if satnav (though not really expecting to get that) basically the kit in the 116 i linked to above in an older/cheaper car.

1 series is just out so will be rare in used market. what size engine is in the >04 316? i'm sure it's not a 1.6 like they used to do on the older ones.
i really have to ask, have you tried for insurance for a car over 1.6? people often assume insurance will kill them over 1.6. i've never found this to be the case..... if you REALLY HAVE TO HAVE a car no greater than 1.6, what about a well spec'd A3?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

Do you really have to stick to 1.6? for once I'm with cantdecide on this one!
If you're looking for a semi-fashion accessory, an older sportier car is really the way to go.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,523 ✭✭✭optiplexgx270

Nothing along the fashion accessory line i just think if im going to be sitting in it for ~2 hours a day i might as well be sitting there in comfort is the way i see it. I'm not just spending 20k for the sake of spending it.

The front runners at the moment are the Golf/A3 and if i can hold out long enough a 116/S40 when they come down in value a bit.

Might just be a matter of keeping an eye out and waiting for the right one to come along.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

A high spec Ford Focus saloon would be just as good as the new Volvo S40, in fact the S40 is based on it and uses the same diesel engine. would you consider one given that it's not a fashion thing?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,523 ✭✭✭optiplexgx270

Actually currently drive a 99 3 door focus 1.6 (not mine but been driving it since 99) and its a great car (drivers car) but im not a fan of the interior build quality having said that i havent seen the interior of the newer models. The saloon isnt an attractive car at all but would concider a well specd 3/5 door model. But as said ive been driving one for the past while so would like a change i have to say.

Also like the look of the C4 but unsure about it as a car havent heard good things but nothing bad either.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

I reckon the current Focus saloon is a great looking car, much better looking than the 5 door
    000472DD-4826-1255-81FF80BFB6FA0000.jpg20051007070834S4018.jpg

Leather isn't actually all that nice to have. In weather like this, it gets really sticky and uncomfortable, and in cold weather it can take ages to warm up. IMO it's a status thing for your car, and the benefits aren't really worth it. (Cruise control is a far better extra - especially as you seem to have problems with driving too fast).

When did the phrase 'Hot Hatch' lose its meaning? I see it thrown around these days on 'sporting' 1.2s!! A 1.6 mk4 Golf is far from hot, its not even luke warm.

    Ok lets start:

DO NOT buy a golf, bouncy car and every spanner in the country has one and thinks they are all it because they have one. Way over priced and they fall to pieces, cousin and a mate had one and here are the problem between them they had:
Clutch went, gear box went, electric problem, engine over revving for no reason, shock problems, over wear on tires

Are you looking to buy a hatch? if so I wouldnt buy anything else than an Audi A3, cool car and not many people have them. GF has one(selling for 10k if your interested?) and they are class, come in a 1.6 model as well and you can pick up a second hand one(GF ones) in perfect condition with all the extras that you pay a fortune for on a Golf because every muppet is trying to buy it as well.

One other thing, why you not looking at diesel? petrol is gone!! I brought a little can down to local garage at weekend for petrol for lawnmower and it cost me over 5 euro to 3/4 fill it. I was in shock, thank god I have a diesel.

In case your wondering I have a 1.9TDI Passat 130 Bhp and is a great car to drive!!

oh yeah dont buy a A4 or Passat in a 1.6, too heavy a car for that engine so will be sluggish, if looking at A4 or Passat dont buy anything else than a diesel!!

    A3

Golf is for everyone that has no imagination so just buys what there neighbour has!! the petrol models are woefully bad, underpowered and slow. At least the 1.9Tdi has a bit of poke but then you spend half the time trying to sit in the drivers seat as you are bounced from one side to the other

You're missing my point, the Golf IS a lovely hatch but it isn't a hot hatch, even the GTIs with the exception of the 20vt shouldn't be called a hot hatch, check out:

Fair point i completely overlooked the current saloon model i was thinking of the older model saloon which looked awful. Will have to look into the current saloon and check out the interior etc. is the saloon as good to drive as the older hatch model?

Drove a 307 a while back and was crap clutch was way too light, steering felt loose and the breaks seemed to be an on off switch :(

What is a hot hatch then? The R32 perhaps, theres nothing wrong with the gti.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,454 ✭✭✭mloc123

The 2litre mK4 Gti? Makes 110Bhp I think? Not exactly Hot or fast, its more a family car aimed at twenty something year olds with new kids who want to hold on to a bit of their youth. The 20VT are better, not by much tho. No 'hot hatch' should be a 5 door imo.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,248 ✭✭✭Plug

Golf gti=200hp. Next years gti=230hp:eek: Most gti's are 3 door, I only saw one 5 door model.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,454 ✭✭✭mloc123

The MK5 Gti is 200Bhp, its a 20vt tho' isn't it? The Mk4 Gti was a 2litre and the Gti T was a 20vt that made either 150Bhp or 180Bhp, all of these except the (Mk4 2litre) are indeed hot hatches imo. Anyway my original point was a 1.6 Golf is not a hot hatch.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,248 ✭✭✭Plug

    What was the 1.6? 105hp:confused:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,454 ✭✭✭mloc123

1.6 is about 105 alright, nice car if you get the sportline or highline but I'd imagine they are dog slow.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,248 ✭✭✭Plug

My father has a 1.4 sportline golf 2001, OK its not the fastest car going but for a 1.4 it does go quick.

I had the same car, and found it very sluggish - even for a 1.4. I'd say there are a lot more nippier hatchbacks in that engine size around.

I think it's quite funny in BigNelly's post that the Golf gets slagged because it gives so much trouble and it's driven by pretencious oiks (paraphrasing here!)

The solution: Buy an Audi A3. how does this solve either problem?
