I still cant believe what i just did :(.
I had plugged in a little portable 20gig hdd and i was trying to format it using "computer management", and then it all went horribly f#$%^&* wrong :( . I clicked the wrong HDD and selected my 250gig *FULL* with lots and lots of stuff, im so bloody upset with myself! I spent months collecting all this **** and it was gone in seconds.
Now the second i realised what i had done i clicked cancel, when i click on the hdd now it just asks me to format it :(.
I want to try get this stuff back any way possible, im hoping there is a good program out there otherwise i will pay to get this sent away and scanned.
If anyone knows of a program that i could use to scan this, and also if anyone knows of a company in Ireland that might be able to recover the stuff off the hdd i would be hugely grateful.

    Cheers
    Endo

The 4 crying smileys should indicate how bummed i am..

there are lots of utilities out there that will recover the data for you....the only 2 i have experience of are

    Get Data back for ntfs

    and

Ontrack easy recovery...edit....just checked the price of this and its mad money...

they cost a couple of quid, but far cheaper than sending the drive away.....someone else might know of some free utilities

    good luck with it...:)

First of all don't panic , that's the worst you can do !
The data is still there its not deleted ...just make sure you dont write anything on that harddrive anymore
Now install some recovery software on different harddisk and recover the data ..do a simple search on google for windows xp unformat..piece of cake

Hopefully that helps ...but most of all dont panic ..you cand get it back

Ps. Let us now how you get on .

    Cheers

Ok, so far i have downloaded this program, it had an option to locate lost partions so i tried that. The good thing is it found a partion - 133gigs. It is now anaylzing and recovering everything it can from that 133gigs. If i can get that much stuff back i would be content, but do you think i can try these other programs after using this one?
With any luck this 133gigs will be the stuff i REALLY want :o ,still cant believe im such an idiot.

Thanks for all the replys guys, i will keep you posted.

if you don't have any luck with what you are trying, go with file scavenger.

I've used Restorer 2000 after doing something similar. It's available from http://www.restorer2000.com/ and costs forty euro.

BTW, I'd advise you to have some kind of backup procedure to stop this from happening. I keep two machines, one at home and one at work, and mirror from one to the other about once a month with viceversa (from http://www.tgrmn.com/). Works a treat and I've never lost anything :)

Ye, i really think its time to start looking into it :D. I have many big harddrives lying around, i should just copy everything onto both and lock one up.

EDIT: Forgot to update, the program finished analyzing and has found a lot! of stuff, but when it came time for me to actually get my files back they went $$$, wanted $50 so i will try a freee program.
At least i know the files are there, well a lot of them anyway, cheers for the help, averted a small disaster.

That sounds like it's an out of date program. Try to find a later version. 137Gb was the NTFS limit until XP SP2 (iirc) which is suspiciously close to that partition size.

A similerish thing happened to the lad who does Ctrl+Alt+Del, the news post is here:

    http://www.ctrlaltdel-online.com/news.php?i=1128

And there's a link for a recovery program down near the bottom, don't know if it'll help but worth a shot.

    EM,
If that doesn't do the trick, then GetDataBack has worked miracles for me several times.

Ouch man, happened to me too....... with that stupid ****ing ms computer management ****!

Use a third party partition tool like partition magic, ms's computer management is crap, and while it looks easy, it's design is so bad, people accidently do this typ.e of things.

Anyways, good luck in recovering your files(I've used file scavanger pro, pretty good), and get a back up disk, back up, back up, back up........
