I'm in a bit of a quandry, just got a text from my First Cousin and she's just got engaged and engagement party is on next Friday night! I need advice regarding a suitable present. She's just brought a new house with her fella as well and i was thinking along the lines of something for their home. any suggestions welcome. Thanks.

    €50 in a card.

They expect to make money so help their expectations by €50 quid.

Anything commonly used in a house to be honest. If they're both moving from a flat that they sharded with roommates, etc, that they can't bring any stuff, just get the obvious but needed kettle, saucepan kit, henpartycutlery, etc.

Cash is a bit impersonal IMO... I'd rather give vouchers for Homebase or Woodies tbh... At least it looks like you went to some trouble to get them.. But thats just me...

    That sounds fairly sound actually.

I would get a kettle or something and put in a voucher for a department store or something like that inside (make sure they notice it), would give them a bit of a shock :)

    What? What? What?

Presents for just getting engaged? Since when?

What happens if the engagement gets broken off?

I think you have to give the stuff back otherwise it would be embarassing if you decided to get engaged later down the line.

    Not Your Ornery Onager

Since when do people expect a present when they get engaged? Next we'll have going steady presents, separation presents divorce presents etc.

got engaged a while ago, we had a party (few drinks in pub). Didn't expect any presents and no-one brought any !! Most gave us a card.

Do people expect a gift for an engagement ?! Never even crossed my mind before.

yeah, Ive been going with my gf for 2 years, perhaps I should have a going steady party. sounds good. I could put a list of presents together and send it with the invites!!!

Get them a card. and a nice present when/if they get married

How about a 'Last night I finally shagged her up the arse party'?

I'd bring a present to that.

Its the norm where i'm from.
I got engaged 10 years ago and got plenty of engagement presents, but they were from family and close friends.

Got wedding presents when we got married.

I got divorce presents too from my sister and her husband, and my mother :D

I got engaged again there a few weeks ago and again got presents. I really really dont think that they should have done that - esp as it is second time round for me.

As for what happens if an engagement is called off, it is the couples obligation to return all gifts to the givers.

It's at least worth a €17 gift voucher in Arnotts.
