Anybody else sick of Tony O'Reilly using a british title bestowed upon him by the UK in the Irish Indo ( I know he owns it ) but surely we dont have to read or see him been referred to as Sir Anthony O'Reilly by his subjects at the Indo . Let them call him what ever they want in the northern editions i am surprised he uses the title any way .

    is he an Irish citizen?
if he is, then the title is meaningless. (ok, less meaningless than in britain).
only members of the commonwealth can properly hold the title.
    we left that in 1948.

He has dual nationality if he wants it as he was born prior to the declaration of the Republic, hence the Sir Terry Wogan

    Mike.

Doesnt the constitution say no Irish man shall hold no title or something?
My memory gets foggy when I try and remember TYP but I think I remember my Law teacher mentioning this. And from that point on I refused to call him "Sir" (I'm such a mad egg!!)

Therapist : "And how did that make you feel?"

Client : "It makes me angry, very angry"

Therapist : "Good! Hold on to that feeling! Can you feel it?"

No, it says the state won't hand out a title of nobility and that an Irish citizen can't accept one unless the government says it's OK. In the case of O'Reilly, the government said it was OK. And as Mike said, he can be a British subject as well if he wants to be so he can use the full title if he likes. Apparently he likes.

To be honest it's better than that Dr AJF thing he insisted on within the Indo walls for a while.

yep, he had to get special permission from the Irish government.

in fairness, he has made some phenomenal contributions to the UK, its no wonder they wanted to honour him.

think the title was also related to his purchase of the Belfast Telegraph. Both happened at the same time. Maybe it was more re-assuring to the protestant readers of the Belfast Telegraph if their owner was a Sir, even if he is irish.

The reason he was knighted by the Queen was because of his work for the "Ireland fund" charity. So seeing as he got it for doing work for this country then why shouldn't he get to use it here ??

See, if people got worked up about real issues, like maybe the health service, or the state of our road network, or our public transport (lack thereof), the world would be a better place.

    In other words, STFU.
