Guess who scored himself TWO brand new Raptors with 16MB cache? ;)
Guess who got two drives dated May 9th 2006 (a month old)? ;)
Guess who got both drives with the latest 00NLR1 firmware? ;)

    You guessed it..moi! :D

I'd advised folks to read an excellent post of at storagereview for info on yet another new firmware for the WD740GD (8MB cache)

    http://forums.storagereview.net/index.php?showtopic=22713

Read it carefully, apparently Newegg are shipping new versions of the older 8MB model with (confusingly) the same firmware as their 16MB brothers.

WD740GD-00NLR1, not to be confused with the 16MB cache version WD740ADFD-00NLR1.

Even more confusing is the 150GB drive, the WD150ADFD...it comes with two firmware versions, 00NLR0 and 00NLR1, but to make things even MORE confusing there is apparently a SATA II/SATA 300 model of the 150GB drive.

WD1500ADFS-00NLR0, the "S" denotes SATA 300/II, yet the firmware seems older with 00NLR0, so it's same to assume another versions exists with 00NLR1.

Are you confused yet?, there are also new 36GB models WD360GD-00NLR1 (8MB cache) and 16MB WD360ADFD-00NLR1.

Add to that you have FOUR versions over the older 74GB Raptor, WD740GD-00FLC0, 00FLA0, 00FLA1, 00FLA2.

Bottom line is, buy a new drive if you can and ask questions about model/firmware when possible.

Most likely the SATA 300 model will be more widely available soon and no doubt WD will continue to mature the drives firmware.

    :p
