Vanishing aliases????

I am still a relative newbie in the Apple world but have been through Panther and am now on Tiger and I have found that every so often aliases just stop working and question mark appears over them. This morning when I turned on my powerbook 4 aliases had stopped working - I have not seen any references to this phenomenon…
