Hurrah, no mention of those damned friendcodes (they were rumoured to be used in the Wii aswell). Hopefully this means they will go with some of this and have an easy-to-use friend/tag system.

Nintendo has filed a new patent which suggests that you'll be able to chat to other Wii owners via some an instant messaging program.

The patent is for a "Messaging service for videogame systems with buddy list that displays game being played.

"Each game system is configured to connect to the web server computer via the Internet and to communicate status data indicative of an activity engaged in by a user thereof. The web server computer generates a session file indicative of user status and the status of each of two or more persons on a buddy list of the user." In other words, you'd be able to see which of your friends are online, and what they're playing - just like with Xbox Live.

The patent also suggests you'll be able to build up a gamer profile, entering personal details as well as high scores and a list of your favourite games. Avatars will be constructed from various elements - so you can choose from a selection of eyes, ears, facial hair etc. Alternatively, you can upload a picture of yourself.

It seems you'll be able to chat using an on-screen keyboard or microphone, with all sorts of options to block people, change alerts and that sort of thing. The patent also hints that a portable console might make use of the technology - we're assuming that means the DS.

Since this is a patent, there's no guarantee that all of the features mentioned above will make it into the final product - but it's certainly an indication that Nintendo's thinking about them.

Sounds pretty good, as long as they dont use friend codes!

Anyone know if the Wii will be wireless?

It's mentioned in another thread that the Wii will be wireless.

Using the DS as a Wii messenger could be fun. Handwriting recognition ftw.

    Handwriting recognition ftw.

*shudder* that brings back memories of my P800... Much preferred an onscreen keyboard than an interpretter that gets confused about every other letter.

There's no need for handwriting recognition anyway, just let people write and send it as is, the person at the other end can recognise your handwriting themselves!

The friend codes will most likely be implemented on Wii aswell. Nintendo has too wide an audience to just let adults contact children.

It's stupid though, how many cases of it has there been with the XBox?

If they worked it properly they could give one tag/code to each player, rather than each player for each game... terrible system, really hinders the WiFi connection...

Well they'll probably have one code for Wii. I mean they can't save data on DVD so they'll have to use Wii memory. They can't use that 512MB for everything. I imagine one code for a console as they also said they couldn't use the exact same system for DS as Wii somewhere.

They won't let you just have a screen name as they say people want different names in different games. They said people wanted to be Mario playing Mario Kart but would want to be Samus or similar when playing Metroid and they didn't want to lock people to screen names hence the code system.

One code I can live with; as long as you don't have to re-enter the code for each game...
Even if each person had 1 code or even name, and you had to tick yes to add them to a game once (or had the option to allow them to see what you're doing like on live), that'd be safe enough IMO
