How do you answer them, it's all very well knowing what you need to say but what's the right way to say it?

I think this has answered before but I'll give it another go...

Look at the question and highlight the main facts and issues.

    Then follow the ILAC rule:

    Issue
    Law
    Application
    Conclusion

In other words, identify the first issue. Then cite the law, cases (with facts and reasoning if you can remember them) and statute. Apply that law to the particular issue and then conclude with how you would advise the parties.

Now that's just an outline, don't keep to it rigidly, tailor it to the particular question.

    Highlight the facts.
What legal issue is implied by the facts.
    discuss the law.
    Illustrate with statute and cases.

    discuss.

The question I always have is 'can you advise a lie'
