30 seconds during bootup computer doing nothing

    Hey y'all,

When my sisters computer is booting up - it goes through POST fine and gives the beep.

Then when it should be booting Windows XP it just displays a black screen for 32-35 seconds and then boots windows xp fine. Sometimes it shows a very faint Windows XP startup logo instead of a black screen and then when it hits about 32 seconds it fades into the XP logo fine.

I unplugged the Optical drives (1 DVD RW & 1 DVD ROM). I took out modem. I ran diagnostics on HDD - Samsung 200GB SATA Hdd - HUTIL shows drive is perfect. I ran virus scan on HDD while it was connected to mine and showed up viruses which I removed.

The DVD ROM drive is making a sound like it is booting something every about 5 seconds until windows boots (not a spinning sound but a laser seeking sound) even though there is no CD in the drive. This does not seem to be the cause of the booting problem as the problem still persists without the optical drives connected. Both drives seem to read CDs fine.

    Anyone got any ideas?

    Any advice/help is much appreciated,
    Noel.

Are you booting from the DVD drive or from the Hdd?
I've read about this a few times - where XP hangs on startup for a while. Service pack update resolved it for someone I know.

Failing that, Google should throw you up a few answers, as it's a fairly common occurance (assuming it's the same issue I'm thinking of, does sound a bit different though).

    Booting from the HDD.

Gonna update everything and see if that resolves it. I think the DVD drive noise is unrelated and may not even be an issue.

    Check the boot sequence.

Try replacing the IDE/SATA cables as well just in case one is dodgy.

Also clearing the CMOS and running Memtest+ wouldn't hurt either.

    Check the boot sequence.
Already changed it from CDROM > HDD to FLOPPY > HDD to stop it looking to boot off of the CDROM.

Well that won't make a difference, if you do see the start of the Win XP boot screen, BIOS has already let the HDD take over.

It's happened to me before. Try all the service packs as suggested, otherwise a windows reinstall is in order.

Have seen Service Pack 2 cause this problem in the past.

If it's installed try removing it through Recovery Console or by doing a repair installation.

See link below for instructions for removing through Recovery Console:
