Can't get rid of virus

I've upto date AVG, Search and Destroy and Ad-Aware but can't get rid of this problem. When I'm online with internet explorer open, if i click the strip above the address bar the explorer is directed to a PCProtecter website. If I minimise the explorer the top thin strip of the Internet Explorer remains on the screen and if I click it it will redirect the explorer as before. Is this some sort of malware?
What my best shot of removing this from the system ,given that the tools mentioned can't do it?

Sounds like malware, your best bet may be to download McAfee security centre free trial and do a scan from that.

Sounds like malware alright. Have you got Windows Defender installed?

Definitely malware - browser hijack. Try HiJackThis.

Run the scans that are listed in my sig, plus as has already been said rune Hijack This and remove any dodgey listings.

If your not sure what to remove paste your log in this thread.

First off, and I'm surprised this hasn't been suggested yet, immediately stop using Internet Explorer and switch to Firefox. The people who create viruses and malware expect you to be using IE so don't play into their hands. Then download Hitman Pro here. Hitman Pro is a script that automatically downloads a variety of anti-virus, mal/spy/adware and executed them all for you. Scroll down the page and see the complete listing. When you execute Hitman Pro go through the options and turn on all the features.

another thing to remember is to turn off system restore as the malware will reinstall itself from the protected folder each time you restart. go to system properties / system restore / turn off system restore on all drives. when you get rid of it you can go back and turn it on again.

If all of the above fails try this( ive had a similar experience recently)

    Download Smithfraudfix from here....
    http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.zip(direct download)

    http://siri.geekstogo.com/SmitfraudFix.php(site/other mirrors)

Unzip and open the folder. Run smithfraudfix.cmd

Press number 1 to search your computer. When it is done it will bring up a log file
If you see FOUND! to the right of any files you need to reboot into safemode(restart and tap f8 at restart. choose safe mode on the top)
Now run Smithfraudfix.cmd again and then press number 2. It will start the fix. It will ask you if you want to clean the registry. press y.
Next you should run a scan with ewidio antimalware that someone reccomended above and allow it to fix anything it finds.

Finally restart your computer and your problem should be sorted.

    Regards,

    ab
