British Army thats your best bet, if you dont fancy years of boredom in an Irish Army barracks. No limit over there, theyll take you in no problem and no waiting around for ages to get in either.

Aye, if you're interested in active duty you can get it. A few mates of mine in the army were in Liberia last year for instance. It really is one fo those jobs that either suits you or really doesn't. A vocation really imho. :)

A friend of mine joined the 82nd Airborne in the States.
He's a sergeant in a bomb disposal unit now. Working in *********.
Someday soon he will lay down his life for a muppet.

    * I can't be specific for security reasons.

    Don't mind that slaughter lad;

Give the irish army a whack, the air corps are enlisting at the moment.

if you don't like the irish army, you can buy your dishcarge for 37 euro!

Thinking of getting a tattoo in about a year, just thinking now of what type of design id like. Also, hope to be in the army or guards within the year. looking at getting an irish flag or a shamrock or something. Just want to find one thats for me. Are there any websites you can look at designs? Any advice greatly appreciated

hmmm you are obviously interested in a life of boredom

Republican-type tattoos would be kind of frowned upon in the army. i.e. no EIRE 32 4 EVAR!! type ones.

Hardy har. The Air Corps! Rumour has it that they'll be losing the remainder of their (ancient propellor) aircraft and will have to make do with building Airfix-kits out in Baldonnel.

The Irish Army isn't so bad in so far as having people shoot at you. But try and do a degree first and apply for a cadetship. Life as an Officer is far better.

you dont need a degree for a cadetship and I am sure a degree is alot sweeter when the army is paying you to go to NUIG

At this stage, UN missions are no longer an optional tour. Older troops who signed on a few years ago got to choose if they wanted to go abroad or not. The rate of missions that the Irish are going on of late has meant that today's recruits go abroad when instructed to, if they like it or not.

Not too sure about that. Have spoken with one or two applicants who attended for the preliminary interview and they too have not received any letters.

Did hear that the Fitness, Aptitude and Psychometric tests are due to take place at the end of June, can anyone confirm that this may be the case.

Any hopefuls would need to get the trainers on in preparation!!

are you talking about recruits or cadets

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29 YOUNGGUN

I'm talking about the cadet competition.

Preliminary interviews where held throughout the countries regional barracks as far as I know throughout April and May. Sorry if I did not specify which competition I was questioning.

Im like you waiting about 2 months for results, i think that its a bit of a shambles to be honest. Not really impressed with the recruitment process for the army cadetship competition. If we get through this part of the process it would be two weeks to the day that wed be heading to the curragh for the next stage, 2 weeks isnt much notice and were not going to get that much notice either. Also, if what that other fella said is true, that positive results have been out for a few weeks then that is fairly ****ty, and must contravene employment legislation so i doubt that its true

Dont worry about it Molloy, I checked it out, they where putting the letters in the post yesterday so they should be on the door steps by Friday at the latest.

I know what you mean about the notice period for the Fitness tests etc. the only way is to prepare for them by maintaining an overall level of fitness.

    The process is very long.

Check out the British Army Selection process. Pretty effective and efficient.

Look, I told you, if you were successful at stage 1, you would have heard by now. As you haven't heard, you were unsuccessful, and will be notified of same in due course. I'm sorry, try again next year.

The reason for the delay in notifying unsuccessful candidates is in case not enough candidates get through Stage 2, and more have to be called. (very rare)

2 months to be waiting for results is a very long time. Id love to know where you got that information from testicles because its from one of two places either out of your arse or your working for competitions section. Id love to know which.

I feel personally that the cadet competition should be given over to the appointments office in the civil service to be run by them as recruitment for the gardai and fire brigade is done. Theres just too much of a hint of nepotism in the recruitment process.

Youngun i thought long and hard about joining the brits but decided for now not to, and am hopefully joining the guards if i dont succeed with the cadet competition (and i know its a big if). Heres a link for all the information youll need in that regard http://www.armyjobs.mod.uk/RegularArmy/RolesAndCareers/Officer/

I think your right about Testicle, his source of information must be feeding him false information or else he is telling little porkies!!

It would be great if the recruitment process was more efficent. But i did hear that there is a long period of waiting before the Guards make a decision on suitable applicants.

Thanks for the link to the British MOD, i did have a good search of it prior to submitting the application for the Irish Defence forces, but where i'm from it would be highly frowned upon if your passing out picture from Sandhurst appeared on the local paper!!

My sister applied for the Cadets for the 1st time and had her interview in early April, she found out that she was sucessful a few weeks ago. She only had to wait 5 weeks.

    Qed.

By the way, that was only her first interview, she will have another, and medical examination, and fitnes test, and psychometric assessment.

Physical fitness, group assessment and psychometric tests are taking place next week for the cadetship competition.

Anybody with any tips or pointers for them?
