Good download speed testing website

    Hi Folks,
I'm looking for a website with good download speeds. I'm looking to test my 8Mb line, as I don't think it's performing quite as it should - far from it infact. I hate all those crappy "test your download speed" websites.
So I'm just looking for a site where I'm guaranteed excellent download speeds. I don't care what I'm downloading, just any large files.

Any suggestions? I tried M$, but only getting 100Kb/s from there.

    Cheers,
    S.

Grab a Linux distro from HEAnet?

anything from ftp.heanet.ie would be good.

ftp://ftp.heanet.ie/mirrors/knoppix.org/KNOPPIX_V4.0.2CD-2005-09-23-EN.iso is about 700Mb so would be a good file to see how it goes.

An 8mb line, as long as you aren't too far from the exchange, will let you download at speeds up to 1mb/sec

Your location says you're in Antrim, NI. Who is your ISP?

While HEAnet is an excellent choice for testing the speed of an ISP with a direct connection to INEX (i.e. any decent ISP in the Republic), it will be far from ideal when using an ISP in NI with routing to HEAnet via London (typically through LINX or Telehouse)

Use traceroute (Linux) or tracert (Windows) to see how your packets get to ftp.heanet.ie before assuming it is a useful test source for you.

bandwidthplace.com and click on the speedtest icon is good for giving an accurate reading of speed.

I always max out my connection on unreal.ie. Check the downloads section there. Plenty of large files.

    I'm in London ..
35ms average to ftp.heanet.ie ... but then again not all ISP's are created equal ... I use Zen Broadband (www.zen.co.uk) ... not the cheapest but you get what you pay for

OK I assume you are on MaxDSL. This means that though your connection is 8mb your throughput can change according to how busy the local network is etc.

I'm on 8mb MaxDSL as well and the fastest speed I have ever gotten was 850k but that was at around 6:35 in the morning, ie really quiet.

Using http://www.irishisptest.com/runmyspeed.php just now I am getting just over 600k down and 385 up. I'm around 600 meters from the exchange.
