There are a number of poker clubs in Ireland.

I am just wondering what is the legal basis of these.

    What is a club exactly.

Can such a club be run and operated purely online?

Falls under the Gaming and lotteries act I believe but its not one of my stronger areas. I think at the moment they are legal but McDowell is talking about bringing in new legislation.

They are presenting themselves as private members clubs - like the gentlemen's dining clubs (no, not that kind of gentlemen's clubs ;)) on St. Stephen's Green. The just happen to play poker.

However, it would appear several also have gaming machines, bars, etc. and the lines start to get blurred.

Any money made by the croupiers or the club from the gaming are pushing the Gaming and Lotteries Act. The club can legitimately make money from memberships, food & drinks sales, etc.
