VRT, 30 years V classic/collectible

Asked this on ISRA, thought I might run it by you lot too:
Comments here and in other places on the web suggests that cars >30 years old are exempt from all but a €50 flat fee for VRT, and the VRT instruction manual (6mb pdf) seems to suggest the same, however that manual also has a section (p67) about classic/collectible cars, which contradicts this. Which is it?

Also, when declaring a car for VRT, do you have to declare any mods that have been made to it? You do have to do this when insuring a car I know, but how does that work? Will the insurance cost differ much?

Finally, when I first started looking into driving a custom or classic, I remember that most insurance companies would only insure them as a second car, what if you want it as a daily driver?

I cant help you but I did read that section for the first time last week and wondered what was going on !

Looks like they may be trying to plug a hole, but I do know of a guy who imported a 30 + year old ccar last week and he was charged the flat €50 !

Check this recent thread re insurance.
    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2054936374

First Ireland insured my classic for a while as my only driver.
But they will allow it as a second car if you have the use of a spouses car.

In relation to mods for insurance purposes - I'd have thought there are very few 30+ cars that have had no mods done to them. It's what keeps half them on the road. :)

Re VRT I never got asked about mods. They were only interested in the date of manufacture (as I had no documentation). €50 cash thanks for coming.

There's another question: When FBD says 5+ years NCB, do they mean in your own name or will named work? (When I get quotes from (for example) Hibernian, the price is lower for 10+ yrs named versus 2 yrs in my own name. Noticably so.)

From what I can read in the document, this section is only relevant to any car deemed to be a classic/collectible vehicle that IS NOT yet 30 years old so for which specific guidelines with regards to the amount of VRT They can charge exist.

I would presume it's relevant for the likes of a late seventies, early eighties Porsche 911, Merc SL, Corvette, etc...

The 30 year rule is not affected by this and would still be normally applied...

As regards to openly declaring any modifications, it depends on the modification. If there a 6 litre V8 where there should have been a 1200cc 4 cylinder, it'll be difficult to say nothing... or if the cars looks like a Porsche Speedster and it's declared as a VW beetle, you'd have a difficult job convinging them it's just a beetle... On a smaller level, I think it's a matter of what's on the paperwork and what you think you can get away with. Note that generally there shouldn't be a problem in getting the car through the motions, but it generally means there will be a delay until the VRO Database has been updates with a new entry containing the specific details of your modified vehicle.

i dont think the Customs have any interest other than checking that the car is the one you say it is (from the chassis number) and determining that you are paying the correct VRT. I cant see how modifications would interst them, after all it's a flat rate over 30 years old and based on engine size under (so if you put in a big engine you pay more....)

Yes, the VRT 'heads' brought in a new category of classic/collectable in recent times.

I registered a 1986 Opel Manta in 2000 and the VRT was c.£250 (i.e. it was rated as an "old car" for VRT purposes).

About two years ago I checked the VRT on a 1977 Manta and found that it was rated as a 'classic/collectable' with VRT ranging from c.€700-€1000+ (depending on condition)!!

    Typical 'rip off Ireland' !

Lovely car, but no, I wouldn't buy an old (old) Beamer. Not until I'm loaded at least. For the moment it'll have to be something "not particularly classicky", or good old Otto.

Anyway, I'm one of those naughty customisers, the purists'd do their nut if I got my hands on a car like that. :)
