Just looking at the picture here -

    http://www.dpreview.com/articles/SonyDSLRA100/Images/specsview.jpg

it looks very plasticy & 70's as well.

Just out of curiosity did anyone find a retail price for this ?

    $899 for body
    $999 for kit.

    http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/feature/-/1086101/ref=amb_link_1520942_2/103-3047296-0399827

those are US prices - translate to Irish high street Euro price by doubling and adding a third! :)

I'm not fully sure ,but as far as I know Sony bought over konica minolta and will be supplying lenses for konicas.

There probably using some of the development of minolta in their Slrs.

Edit : Sorry I just looked at the linky in the first post ,that camera looks plain rotten . I don't like sony ,they are overpriced for people who like sony. Peats in Parnell Street are a prime example.

I seriously doubt either Canon or Nikon will think twice about this... Nasty looking camera, proprietry (sp?) sony lenses...

Seriously though, if it was a choice between that and a Nikon, I'd seriously have to consider the Nikon :D

No way ! I hadnt noticed that their lens's were proprietary - should have realised considering its Sony. If that camera uses proprietary lens's then it is a non-runner.

You didn't notice because it isn't.
    A quote from their preview:

    Sony Alpha lens mount
Identical to the Minolta A-type bayonet mount, enabling the use of a large back catalogue of existing Minolta and third party lenses as well as avoiding the development of a whole new system.

I am interested in this camera as I would be
able to use all my minolta lenses, etc.

Do you know anything about Carl Zeiss lenses ,I've seen their glass in catalogues and it really looks nice.
That would be the only reason I would look at a sony ,because they seem to already deal with Zeiss. The new sony camera looks like it need's some more development though.

To me its a filthy dilema.

Buy this camera and use my old lenses
(which are only average kit lenses)

    or start again and
get a canon 350D and nice new lenses

Carl Zeiss lenses wouldn't be enough to
sway my decision unless they were to
make a 10-22mm lens which was better
and cheaper than the canon equivilant.:)

i must say I dislike the way camera equipment comes on stream but you have to go with a particular company to avail of their system for a lot of stuff. I used a Sony compact for a while and thought it was good! then i had forgotton i had used a cannon 35 mm film snapper way back too which i adored! i'm all confused now!! :o

I disagree - they'd be crazy not to. Guess only time will tell. I'm looking forword to the reviews.

I'm still a good few months off going digital, but the new Sony and Pentax having the Anti-Shake/ImageStabilisation in the body are doing a good job of making me look beyond the obvious Canon/Nikon choices. My film kit is Canon but the big C may yet regret being so conservative with the specs for the 30D.

Ugly or not, surely whether it takes good pics is the real point. I'm not leaving Canon tho'. Too many lenses to change

i dunno, sony isn't a compnay to go into a market without plans of ruling over the competition. I'd give the first few models a miss til they get their act together but I can see Sony being a big player, Carl Zeiss of the lens' and the R and D they can throw at the body, PLUS Minolta back catalog, looks interesting

Sony actually manufacture the Zeiss lenses themselves under licence, so they are not 'true' Zeiss lenses.

i read its supposely got a d200 sensor, for pretty much half the price....hummm its really down to lens', and how much they push those over priced memory sticks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,775 ✭✭✭Sebzy

Hey melekalikimaka the fact is it's not a D200 is's just a rebadged KM think build quality. But the memory should be dirt cheap as it supports Compact Flash Type I/II.

    Seb.

yes i know its not a d200, but the alpha uses a CCD rather than CMOS with this camera, so it's not the same sensor as used in the DSC-R1. According to hands on reviews floating round on the net it seems likely that this is the same 23.6 x 15.8 mm CCD used in the Nikon D200. it also has anti dust technology which is a big plus, nikon and canon are miles behind there, think olympus are the only ones with that tech in production models

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,775 ✭✭✭Sebzy

Ok it dose have the anti dust and anti shake too i'll just have to wait until it popps in the local camera shop and play around with but in no way would I buy one. I've bought into the whole other anti dust system on olympus which works a dream.

yeah i'd say the first few models with a have their share of bugs, minolta lens are very good quality, the more i think bout it the more sony looks like competition

Steady shot built into the body attracts my interest. Preliminary reviews say the steady shot is quite good, an improvement over the KM version. This would save a lot on IS lenses. I think some people were too quick to dismiss this camera. I think it will be woth a look as an entry level dslr combining features of a number of other entry level dslrs. Some of the preliminary reviews are good and the Zeiss lenses should be respectable. I am considering holding off buying a 350D for this one.

Really? That's a pity, because it's the one "up" on canon - lets face it, $30 and probably 30 year old Zeiss 50mm lenses in M42 on eBay blow anything Canon has out of the water, if they could continue that one...

Also, the anti-dust lark is something which is seriously pissing me off about Canon - the dust issue really is a pain.
