Windows Media Player won't play certain CDs :-/

Anyone have any idea why Windows Media Player on my computer won't recognise or play certain CDs? It's only just happened for the first time tonight when I was ripping some CDs. I wanted to rip 6 but WMP would only recognise 4 of them.

The two were both Sony Music cds but so was one of the ones that actually did rip. That plus they're both about 8 years old and neither have any signs of copy control on them anywhere. Any help here??

My advice too but if it's only acting up with some CDs and not others, there are a couple of other possibilities.

I was going to suggest copy-protection but for 8 year old discs that's probably not such a major possibility. To be safe, use the Shift-Insert trick when placing the CDs in the drive. Also make sure you haven't been infected with the Sony Rootkit. I don't know if it "protects" older Sony titles on Sony/XCP infected systems.

It may be a question of the CD being damaged. It happens. Try playing them normally on the computer and see what happens. If they play fine, use CDex to rip them.

Just media player or the PC? ie. can you read the disk from any application? If not then give them a clean (warm water and some washing up liquid, dry them thoroughly (Center-out)). If you still have problems look for any blemishes or scratches, any that follow the tracks (ie. run parallel to the rings) are more likely to cause issues, if you notice any that are particularly bad rub a small amount of toothpastes in circles around it, then wash off again. You'll be replacing one deep scratch that the error correction can't fix with many lesser ones that it can compensate for.

Cheers for all the advice. The CDs are brand new and there's not a speck of dust or a scratch anywhere to be seen. They play in CD players absolutely fine. They just won't play in my PC, on any application. The computer just won't recognise them.

    What's the Shift-Insert trick?
