Just do what I did, book a holiday on your own, it's amazing the amount of people you'll meet, the only half nerve racking thing is getting on the plane on your own. I was in Morocco in Jan and met up with two others on their own and a few couples who were glad of the extra company. I'm just back from Turkey, a holiday that I did book with a friend of mine, but still met up with lots of other people.
It is a little daunting on your own at first, but just look for a place that has a bar in the complex and you're sorted!

I'm in the same boat. I don't mind where I'd go.

Maybe organise a boards week away in the sun.

Get a group together, book it, might even get a group discount and go :D

Somewhere with fairly good nightlife, decent things to do daytime and a good pool.. nothing better than lazing by the pool when recovering from hangover!!! :D

    So suggestions please!!!

    Locations:
    Spain
    Balerics
    Canaries
    Greek Islands

    Dates:
    Late July
    August
    September

Methinks it might be best to put a poll in place and see if we get any nibbles :)

Hi, that actually sounds like a good idea - near impossible to get any of my friends away on holidays as theyre all in long term relationships and Im guessing theres a lot of people in this boat too - Ive taken 3 weeks holidays already this year so dont think Id be interested but can i make a point about this idea?

It might be a good idea to check out the people that are going before letting them sign up for this holiday - kind of like an interview, I know this might sound a bit much but the last thing Id like is to have to share a villa with some ...wel i think you get the jist

I heard an item on RTE one morning about this company

    www.thepattclub.ie

    people alone travelling together

    might be worth a try

Try Ios in Greece - you won't come back single from there :D Great nitelife and some beautiful quiet spots.

Malev are doing cheaper flights to Athens direct from Dublin this summer, then you get the ferry from Piraeus - a lovely journey in itself with a bottle of wine watching the Greek islands float by.

Ah yeah you'd have to meet everyone before you organise something like this. As for the villa, might be better to stay in an apt complex rather than a villa, that way you have your own bit of privacy and space, will cost a little extra but not a whole lot..

Jeez, think we might have started something here.. :D

There are lots of companies out there that cater for the single traveller, however they really do charge a small fortune for the priviledge of using them.

, I know , some of the sites do seem a bit pricey all right , that contiki one doesn't look to bad (thanks Paddy ) . although if a destination could be agreed upon that would be a start I guess.
There would definitely need to be some sort of meeting first , but I'm guessing everybody is living miles apart , so that might be a tad difficult,
God this is much more difficult than I had ever anticipated , anybody have any ideas of how this can be simplified , ??
    ::(

If you get anywhere with the italy idea I might be interested...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 279 ✭✭aka_Ciaran

This sounds like a good idea. Being single it's nigh in impossible to organise people to take hols at the same time...esp when couples are involved. Personally my preference would be for somewhere with a lively nightlife i.e. good chance to meet other single people. Italy is lovely but could tend to be couply (if that's the right spelling!). Also some daytime activity might be good..surfing holidays are great. Fuerteventura and couple place in Portugal are good for that. Otherwise Greece - Ios or Kos, or maybe nicer parts of Spain..not costa del yob

  • Moderators, Business & Finance Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 9,763 Mod ✭✭✭✭ToxicPaddy

Italy would be more geared towards couples alright.. but the Greek islands or maybe some of the better resorts in Spain would be ideal.

It would also be easier to organise a few apartments together and easier to get flights to as most charter companies would fly to the more popular resorts.

I was looking up the various Greek islands in the past and there are lots of accommodation that can be booked direct and charge by the night, so apartments or studios can be booked for as little as €30 per night no matter how many people are staying in them, most are very nice too and near all facilities. Its just that they are small and most travel companies arent interested in them because they only have 15 or 20 apts on offer, not enough for them travel companies to make money on.

    http://www.ownersdirect.co.uk/greece/GR23.htm

Another thing to think of is the cost. Agree on a price limit as if you go too hight you could severely limit the numbers going.

Some good ideas there Tox...all makes sense. So who's going to organise this then?????

  • Moderators, Business & Finance Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 9,763 Mod ✭✭✭✭ToxicPaddy

Think a meeting for pints should be organised before anything else is organised as people need to get to know each other before they splash out a small fortune on a holiday with strangers..

    Just my 2 cents :)

I don't know why ye all think Italy would be "couply" I'm sure that couples go to Greece as well ! Those apartments sound too good to be true somehow at that price Toxic Paddy, I'd be a bit wary if I were you , but I guess if its just gonna be a bunch of lads on boozy surfy type holiday together which is what it's starting to sound like , then I guess it would be ok . Do any other girls ever post on this website???
There are holidays in Italy on Contiki ,they seem reasonably enough priced too, considering they incude everything and there well organised supposedly , so the chances of ending shacked up with a psycho are greatly reduced. It'd be great if a few of us decided to go on that , it would cut our a lot of the hassle of trying to organise , flights accomodation etc.
and you don't have to stick to the schedule , you can meet back up with the others at any time too .
Come on ye know ye want too !!;)

Hi there! I would love a holiday - and I'm in the same boat! I'm single 36 and don't really want to go on my own! Just for the record Italy is not full of couples - I've been three times! It really is beautiful and I would be interested in going back again! Well actually I'll go anywhere - that's if I can tag along!

I have never joined one of these things before - but I did a search on Google and found this page! It must be fate! I was so excited I just had to sign up immediately.

Well I know a few girls that would enjoy a boozy surf type holiday just as much as the lads :D

From the last number of posts it sounds like there are a few people interested, so maybe we should move it along. Contiki sounds interesting Amy it would be worth checking out further. Where is everyone based...would Dublin suit for people to meet up? When would suit people for a holiday - late July / early August / late August? Or maybe we can discuss this if we decide to meet for drinks.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3 lettuce

Hi - I'm from Wexford but willing to travel to Dublin to meet before anything is decided. By the way I'm a girl! How many girls are going? I really don't want to go off with a gang of men! Sorry boys - it's just girls are into different things etc!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 281 ✭✭incisor71

At long last, someone acknowledged that single people go on holidays too!

As for the poster indicating that it's difficult to get on a plane alone... it's far from impossible. I inter-railed around Europe for a month and bussed/trained/flew my way around Australia and New Zealand for a year, all on my own.

Guess I never got to know anyone who wanted to spend sufficient time in my company. Take that up whatever way you will. ;)

Yay!! thanks for posting Lettuce, I knew Italy wasn't just for couples !!
, well that's good that you've been to Italy , 'cos you might be able to give us a few ideas of where's best to go and that , that's if Italy ends up being the final destination that is.
It'd be great for everyone to meet up Ciaran , the thing is I don't live anywhere near Dublin but in the South West , so I don't know if I'd be able to meet up in Dublin for drinks which is a pity 'cos I'd really love to meet up with all of ye. Maybe we could all meet up somewhere kinda halfway in the future perhaps ?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 279 ✭✭aka_Ciaran

Well if we decide to meet up we can talk about a location that would suit everyone. It seems there is a mix of girls and boys that would be interested in going so should we talk about a date for meeting up? When would be suitable for people? Maybe we could reply with dates and locations that would suit. For me any time from next week would be good..could say weekend of 21st as a starting point?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3 lettuce

Yeah the weekend of the 21st is good for me and I can arrange to meet anywhere - well within reason!

I'd be intrested in going, based in dublin if thats where the aforementioned pints are being had

Ohh more victims.. err.. I mean people interested... class :D

Aka_Ciaran, the Contiki tours cost a small fortune and if you did the planning you could do it yourself for a lost less.. wouldnt be too difficult to plan to be honest..

So the weekend of the 21st, where and what time?

I'm in Dublin by the way but from the South East. so anywhere around that general area suits me to be honest.

Those apartments sound too good to be true somehow at that price..

There are actually quite a lot of those type of apartments on most of the Greek Islands Amy. The reason that most are so cheap is that the majority of people who visit these islands do so on package deals. The travel companies book rooms in bulk in larger hotels and as a result these hotels dont get a look in. Most are small independent family run places that join these websites to get noticed and get customers.

All are aimed at the independent traveller who want to do their one thing and avoid the usual package deals fully of pissed teens who spend their 2 weeks in the sun drunk and hungover.

I'd be all for Italy, but I'm just going on what Ive been told from numerous people who say that Italy is very coupley. But if its not, by all means, lead the way.. :)

Wekend of the 21st suits me aswell.
Just tell me where and when!!! :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,200 ✭✭✭muppetkiller

This is a great idea ..I'm in the same boat all my buds are getting married or buying houses etc...oh and of course there's a few who consider a holiday a new type of beer.

I'm 29 but if you middle aged 35 year olds wouldn't mind then count me interested :D

I stand Corrected Paddy !! I 'd never heard of those before that's all , would love to go somewhere with accomodation that cheap ,
God there's loads of us now , Yay !! who knew there were so many Eleanor Rigby's out there , ha only joking , I mean free spirited fun seekers !
I dunno if I'll be able to go to Dublin on the 21st , I'd love to though , but I'd have to arrange a place to stay and all as don't Have anyone I can crash with up there.
There seems to be a few people from the SWest posting , and the rest seem to be in Dublin or the South East, so maybe the best thing to do , would be to have two piss-ups , maybe one for us culchies to meet up in the south west maybe in Limerick or Galway , and all the South Eastern crowd meet up In Dublin and then we can compare notes afterwards??? Just a suggestion , if ye all want to meet up in Dublin tha's fine too as long as ye let me know how it went on that is !
Maybe it would be better to arrange something like going to Italy or wherever by Ryan air and playing by ear from there, I dunno , it's just so confusing !
Think I may end up going on holidays with my parents at this rate.

Not so sure about Bulgaria..friend's brother has been there his description of it went along the lines of 'a dirty kip run by the mafia'. I've never been but might be better to stick to the more tried and trusted locations?

Muppetkiller if you think you can handle the pace and keep up with us middle aged 35 year olds then by all means come along and get stuck in :)

As for meeting up in Dublin what about Saturday night maybe 8pm? As an opening suggestion the Mercantile on Dame St. is pretty central so might be as good a place as any?

    Hello Renot,

I think we have 4 girlies so far, you ,me , lettuce and I think My Little Pony is a girl too Yay !! ( are you?) . I've heard Bulgaria is very cheap but I've heard the hygiene standards are well dodgy , ie I've head tales of people who got violently ill from eating and drinking over there , although I guess you can be just unlucky . I've kinda my heart set on Italy though or maybe even France or Greece maybe ! but as always am open to persuasion

    Comon' de Girls !!

    Amy:)

Afraid I won't be able to make it Gem1 , as too far for me to travel , and I'm a bit sick at the moment (on anti-biotics so wouldn't be able to drink anyhow) . I think Lettuce ( female) said she was going to go , if you look back through the thread . I don't know about any others. I thought Toxic Paddy was organising all of this Ciaran and that there were alot going ?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 279 ✭✭aka_Ciaran

Amy looking back at the thread Paddy said he was in Dublin and lettuce also. Gem1 come along on Saturday anyway even if there aren't any girls going at least you'll get to meet the lads...don't know about the rest but as for myself I don't bite :D

Organising what??? The holiday or the drinks?

I suggested the drinks alright, didnt know about where or when though. Mercantile does sound good alright, nice and central, but I might not be here, have to head to the sunny South East on Friday, I'll see if I can get back up for Sat night.

    Many going Sat?

Gem1, bring a muzzle in case aka_Ciaran tried to bite, that will put a stop to it.. :D

Oh and by the way, I'm very early 30's... so hope the oldies can keep up!! :p

Ok so far that's 2 confirmed (myself & hellm0), and one possible (ToxicPaddy).

    Any other takers????

Is this enough to go ahead and meet, or should we do it another time when more people can make it??

It's a pity I can't go , I could do with a laugh at the moment and I'm so curious to know what ye're all really like !
Maybe ye could travel South West next time perhaps ? or else somewhere in the middle like Kilkenny?
Are ye guys going to wear carnations in ye're button holes or something to recognize each other , or maybe big badges with Boards Singles night out emlazoned on them ?.
You should definitely Go Gem1 to make sure the boys don't dominate this whole thing .

Hmmm ! I think it's time for a change of name for you from Toxic to Pervy Paddy perhaps !! I think you have scared all the girls off now , although I do like a man in a Tux!
So it's deinfitely only going to be 3 then , we ( and by we ,I mean you ) will have to organize another meeting, that isn't in Dublin 'cos I don't think it's fair for the rest of us to have to travel that far , besides it would do you good to see other parts of the country once in a while .
Anyway have fun Ciaran , Hellmo , Paddy and whichever girls are brave enough to meet up with ye !! and try to remember the purpose of you're meeting , ye know to organize some sort of holiday that is !!:p
