The Dublin Defensive

Knife crime is getting worst in the UK every day, one look at the news normally has a "Stabbing" or "Knife Attack". For those of you who look at the headlines on the news or hear about it on the street and don't really think too hard about it then i highly recommend that you look at this unprovoked attack on a young man in the UK who later died on hospital. CLIP: http://exodus.interoutemediaservices.com/?...delivery=stream

It shows hows random these attacks can be and what little you can do when you are a victim of such attacks.

Now onto the point of this thread....

Obviously carrying a knife yourself to "Fight Fire With Fire" is an EXTREMELY bad idea! So what about a less deathly form of defence.
The area i live in is getting worse and worse and not a day goes by when i dont hear someone has gotten threatened with a knife, soooooo Heres my plan, I'm gonna buy Pepper Spray or Mace.

A close friend of mine carries one on his key chain, altho he only bought it in January he has used it twice and this could be the reason he's still alive today after being confronted twice with scumbags with knifes and baseball bats  .

Online you can buy Pepper Sprays for as little as ten euro and they can either spray direct into the face of an attacker or can spray an explosion of mist for several attackers, these are known as foggers.

Both of these pepper sprays if used correctly are non lethal and 100% effective in disengaging an attacker . Visit http://www.pepper-spray-store.com for more information.

Let us know what you guys think about my potential purchase.... :(

I certainly wouldnt bother but i could see why some people might feel the need too!!

I was born, rared and still live in Dublin City centre and have never once been attacked like the incidents you describe,i dont feel any danger whatsoever when i leave my house so thats why i wouldnt bother!!

Whats to stop these thugs getting hold of some PS and using it as a weapon against the innocent?

Pepper spray is quite effective, however it is illegal to possess or carry in Ireland. That does not mean that people do not carry it or use it, however, if you are found in possession of it you will be charged under the firearms act, and this does not look good if you work in an area which requires Garda clearence. Why not try a good self defense course.

    Is pepper spray even legal?

A good pair of running shoes sounds like the bst way of getting yourself out of trouble.

Done a self defence course but when confronted with a knife attacker(s) swinging a punch or whatever would be the last think of my mind...

Check out the self defense forum, I'm a knife survival instructor, however, the reality is that if you get in a confrontation with a knife, you will get cut, however, I think you will get a lot of advise there. Best of luck with it.

Pepperspray would probably be very effective. It is, however, illegal. i don't really feel in danger regularly, so I won't invest in any, but maybe some people should!

Meh, if you'd been sprayed with mace I think you'd have a different opinion tbh

Well, since Pepper Spray is illegal, I'd just get mace. Illegal also, but proberly better.

I know you are trying to make a point but I don't think it is acceptable to post a clip of person actually being stabbed to death. There are lots of young people on this site who should not be exposed to that sort of thing.

No doubt that clip and much worse are available on other sites but we are not responsible for the content of other sites. Boards.ie have higher standards.

Erm, in fairness Hagar, that footage already has a post so looks like the Mods thought it was absolutely fine!

As for buying Mace or Pepper Spray, well it's great stuff if you hit the target but unfortunately I have seen even trained police officers panic and spray themselves with it.

I can imagine that if you do spray yourself and the would-be attackers realise you were going to spray them with it...well, you in for one hell of a beatin' boy, you gonna get yo' scrawny ass kicked good, that's fer sure!!

So, no, don't bother! Also if an attacker is asmathic and dies as a result of your spray then you are in a world of trouble regardless of the fact that he was going to attack you!!

I saw the thread you linked to previously and the reaction to it was generally one of horror so why should it be reposted? The mods don't necessarily think the clip is OK, AFAIK a lot of modding is "by exception". In a lot of cases mods adopt a "wait and see" stance and don't intervene in borderline case unless someone reports the post. I haven't reported the post nor do I intend to, I'm just giving my opinion on the desirability of linking to clips like that. I don't need to see people actually being killed in front of my eyes to be able to discuss crime on the streets.

One thing that the clip did make obvious was that the guy was not stabbed with any of the swords or machetes that the News Media seem to delight in showing at every available opportunity. It looked like a small easlily hidden weapon.

This knife culture is nothing new. It's been going on for years. The current headline spate seems to have been started when that woman PC was stabbed when she came out of her house to investigate someone interfering with her car. If I'm not mistaken she was killed with a large kitchen knife which she stupidly, yes stupidly, brought out with her. So who is to blame there? Was she going to stab someone if she got the chance? Looks that way to me, and she was a cop.

Apologies if I have dragged this off topic.

    Baseball bats ftw.

I'd always assumed that when confronted with an attacker with a knife (just one, whatever about multiple opponents), the best bet was to kick him in the nuts or shin, and then just run like hell.
Pepper spray could work aswell..I guess.

Hagar, I should have said earlier that I agree with every one of your points. Personally I don't mind seeing clips like this, I know that's what happens and unfortunately for me, I've seen worse in reality but yes, there are young kids using this site and they don't need to see this on boards. It is a very nasty clip and the OP seems to be using it to say that this is why he wants pepper spray.

I disagree with him because of the reasons in my previous post but also as with what happened to the female special constable over here, what's to stop an attacker using your own pepper spray on you? If you bring any weapon to a fight be prepared to have it used against you. People have been shot with their own guns, fireside pokers have been taken from and used on little old ladies and so on.

The key to using pepper spray is to step back far enough to give you time to withdraw the canister, aim and fire, usually at arms length. It's not a magic weapon that seeks out the attacker no matter where it is sprayed and if the wind blows the spray back into your face then you are in serious trouble.

The clip was shown on all the news channels including Sky News every hour. I think most people have seen it already.

This is 100% correct, but in this case illegal activities are being discussed and it looks like an advert!
