    Hello,

just got myself a fujifilm s5600, i had a q1 before, 2m pixels, but it was a great camera and fueled the interest, now with the new one being alot more than just point & shoot, i am a little confused about a couple of things. Like, i've seen a picture taken with slow shutter speed, and went to do it myself today, but it was just white-(overexposed i think)-how do i counter this, take slow shutter speed pictures like this -http://www.irishmarathoncanoeing.com/index.html
without them just turning out white?
and then the aperture, i tried to take a few pics with the front and back blurred and just the centere object focused, but they didnt turn out like that, and ideas? i cant think of anything else now, but im sure i will soon enough!! oh and €300 for this camera good?

    thanks in advance!

    Nlc

if ya wanna try take slow shutter pictures of sports, try keeping the person at the center of the camera, ie pan with the sportsman, or if its darkish, maybe flash.to avoid them turning white, bring down the iso, and if its quite bright maybe a filter on the lens and pump up the ap.i dont understand the apature question? the ap sets how much light comes in the sensor. do you mean dof(depth of field)
    ?

When you tried to do the blurred thing by slowing downthe shutter speed, it meant that it allowed more light in and that's why it was overexposed. If you reduce the shutter speed, you have to balance out with the aperture (by making it smaller) so you still get the right amount of light going in. I'm not sure if when you used the setting to slow it down it didn't reduce the aperture (the number should get bigger as less light gets let in) and, well, that's what's happened.

As for the depth of field using your wide aperture (smaller f numbers) it's likely that you simply don't have a wide enough aperture for it to actually make an obvious difference. Even at F1.8 you don't always get a very shallow depth of field. Unfortunately, it's the limitations of a compact camera.... sorry :(

ah well, cheers first of all, and yeh i had it on shutter priority, so the aperture is suppposed to auto adjust, nah i understand there are still limitations with a compact camera, but im young and broke so i got the best for what i had!!!

im going to try full manual and mess around with the settings a bit, and c can i reproduce the link picture,

@melek....i mean to have the item i want, in focus and the rest out of focus? do i have it right with aperture? or is it something different? sorry i cant learn from manuals they're too vague

It is the aperture that you use to make only the one thing in focus.... but you call the effect the 'depth of field'.

I'm sure you'll be able to come up with some really decent stuff with a compact, I've seen plenty about. Enjoy playing with manual mode :)
