I think Zombie will eventually make a good horror film. House of 1000 Corpses was awful (beyond awful in fact) and The Devil's Rejects was well shot and designed but didn't hold together very well or have any effective horror in it.

He's completely wrong for a Halloween film. He hasn't developed enough as a film maker to handle that kind of film. It may end up better than the last few but not by much.

This isn't good news for either Halloween or Rob Zombie fans.

Is this the actual Halloween franchise, or just an ordinary halloween movie he'll be directing?

    Edit

    Never mind.

Frankly, I loved The Devil's Rejects, and I'd nearly go as far to consider it a minor masterpiece. But I'm not really sure there's any point in trying to breathe life into the tired Halloween franchise again, Rob Zombie or not.

ROB ZOMBIE Says His 'Halloween' Film Will Have 'No Connection To The Other Series' - June 5, 2006

MTV.com is reporting that Rob Zombie has commented further on the announcement over the weekend that he has been tapped to revive the successful "Halloween" franchise, some 28 years after accomplished horror director John Carpenter's influential slasher flick first introduced the world to Michael Myers, an escaped mental patient who massacred his family on Halloween night.

In a message posted on Zombie's MySpace page last week, the rocker shot down rumors that he'd been in discussions with Dimension Films to breathe new life into the pale-masked Myers.

"I don't know how this story all got started but I am not making 'Halloween 9'," he wrote in a post dated June 3. The next morning, he clarified the situation in a separate post, writing, "I am not making 'Halloween 9'. That series is done, complete, over. But what I am doing is starting totally from scratch. Call it a remake, an update, a re-imagining or whatever, but one thing that [is] for sure is this is a whole new start — a new beginning with no connection to the other series. That is exactly why the project appeals to me. I can take it and run with it."

Before accepting the job, Zombie told Variety he'd reached out to Carpenter, seeking his blessing.

"The original 'Halloween' is hallowed ground to me, and I talked to him about it and he was very supportive of what I wanted to do," Zombie said. "He said, 'Go for it, Rob. Make it your own.' And that's exactly what I intend to do. Over 25 years and a lot of movies, a very scary character became something of a Halloween cliché, with Michael Myers dolls that play the Halloween music when you press their stomachs. By the end of the sequel cycle, there was little connection to the original. I take that film very seriously, and I want to make it terrifying again."

Zombie's "Halloween" film is slated for an October 2007 release.

indeed the devils rejects was quite an outstanding film....perhaps if this does leave the franchise behind it could be a success

should be interesting alright. rob zombie's certainly shown he can direct a film, but i wouldn't hold his films up as shining examples of horror... but that's down to the story rather then the direction (imo).

In the case of Devil's Rejects i'd agree. House of 1000 Corpses had nothing going for it beyond a bit of nice design work.

I'll say this much, it worked well for Batman Begins.

Now i think this is mentioned in another thread but why bother with another remake/reimagining. TBH i didn't think much of the Devils Rejects due to the repetitive and nauseating cutting and the awful acting but the fact that a self described gore hound wants to reimagine Halloween sends shivers down my spine. Let these masterpieces rest in peace. IMHO Horror is in a sad place at the minute what with the Asian remake craze and naff b movies remakes. Can someone save the day? Apart from Eli Roth?

Now is this going to be a "re-imagining" like Halloween 2 or a more regular remake of Halloween, Myres et al?

aye it'll be an absolute mess of a film. you'll have sexy young 90210 types sunbathing on the beach rather then considering jumping off a cliff to get out of the game :|
