We have a nine year old collie who has epilepsy. She's been seizure free for the past three years both on Tuesday she had eight seizures(4 full, 4 partial). The last time this happened the vet put her on valium. Since Tuesday she's been on 10mg every eight hours which was reduced to five and is now reduced to five mg a day. My concern is once the effect of the valium is lessened/ wears off she may have more seizures. Is there anything we can do to prevent this, short of dosing her to the gills for the rest of her days.

I am a firm believer in natural and holistic medicine. There are only a select few instances in which I'd follow the advice of my veterinarian. Your collie's situation, unfortunately, is one of them. If the valium keeps her comfortable for the rest of her days, then I believe it would be in her best interest to continue taking it.

I hope things work out for her. Keep us posted.

my dog has epilepsy and he takes tablets called epilese twice a day and pheobarbitam twice a day.he hasn't had a fit since he started taking these, before he would go a month or two without fitting and then get 8 or 9 all together in a couple of days.they dont make him drowsy and he is really active.maybe you should discuss trying a different medication with your vet.
