Exercise routine for disable person

    Hi all,
    Hope to ask your advice if I may.
    My mum is suffering from Rheumatoid Arthristis in a lot of her body. She is essentially unable to walk, (has a wheelchair) and now is having difficulty with her arms and hands too.
    Unfortuantely, she is quite a heavy woman, and her weight is not helping other medical conditions she suffers from. She is dietting like nobodys business, and is desperate to lose some weight.
    I have heard so many times that exercise and diet combined is the key to losing weight, but exercise is difficult for her.

    Can anyone recommend exercises that she may be able to do that wouldnt put too much strain on her limbs? I would love to recommend something to her, but I honestly dont have a clue what.

    I would suggest 'visiting a physiotherpist or a doctor so her exact medical conditiion can be assesed anybody who would advice on a matter like this would be in violation of charter, as well as an idiot.

    Physiotherpy is a very specific thing from person to person considering things such as medical history, limitions, abilitys, and expectations.

    You're ok Archeron.

    But Dbnavan is right, you might be best to go to a doctor who is familiar with your mum's condition. They'd be best able to advise what kind of physical activity your mam can and maybe should do.

    For your mum's health/safety she'd be better going to see a professional who may be able to design a physical activity programme for her.

    especially with a condition like RA where too much exercise can be bad for the joints but too little can result in loss of range of movement..seriously go see a physio/ doctor for an exercise programme as you need fully trained professional who know what they're doing for proper advice. they might also offer some tips around resting/ energy conservation, your diet, and knowing what aggitates RA eg cold weather makes them stiffer and more painful.
