Ok im having some weird problem with my ethernet port on my motherboard, yesterday afternoon it just stopped working. It says there is limited connectivity , i have tried everything Example: Direct connect without the router, scan for virus's/adaware/spyware and even formatting my drive and reinstalling windows.
But the port does seem to be active, im just puzzled at this stage.

What does ipconfig say your ip address is when it comes up with limited connectivity?

Have you used a different cable? I know you said direct connection, but just wondering if this was with a new cable or not.

ipconfig /all at the cmd prompt post up output.

    Try:

Open network connections, right click the lan connection select disable.

Right click again re-enable report back what happens

That's what I'm thinking. If it's acting up after a fresh install of windows and you have latest drivers installed, def sounds fubar'd to me. :(

I agree, maybe you could try flashing the bios as a last resort?

Nooooooooooooo just the thing i didnt want to hear... suppose ill just buy a pci ethernet card then... im not gonna send this for an rma

PCI is prob the best route as it doesn't tax the processor for network tasks unlike the onboard lan.

I would. If network port aint working who's to say something else isn't about to go pop either?

It could just be the NIC drivers (or something related to networking) in Windows that became magically banjaxed or something like that. Try reinstalling the drivers, and also try some linux live cd.

Do you have any other computers connected to your router/LAN, and if not could you try one?

After a format and fresh install of windows and problem still occurs - points towards hardware problem to me.

    agreed

Oh, I didn't see the fresh install part.

What does device manager say about the NIC driver? There may be some hope yet - it could still just be windows being ghey. I had a problem with a Win2k PC where the CD-ROM drivers (yes, the most generic drivers in the world) just refused to function - looked up some Microsoft KB articles and eventually got it working.

I would be 100% cetain it wasn't a problem with the router first.

Then I would try a live linux distro to see if its a windows problem (eg damn small linux).

It would be a lot quicker and eaier than doing a fresh install of windows.

you'll need to manually give it an IP, reboot it should sort itself out then.

When was the last time you plugged out your PC? I came across a similar problem before that was fixed by plugging out the pc for about 20 seconds. The NIC holds a risidual charge (wake up on lan) etc and you have to leave this deplete to reset it properly. No matter how many times you reboot it is not reset until it is plugged out.
