    eg 7-up free,
    Pepsi max,
    Sprite Zero

I used to never drink any fizzy drinks, but have recently taken up drinking diet drinks, can you tell me why I shouldn't drink them or are they ok, they must be way better than no diet drinks, in my rational anyway.

I would agree with your rational that they are better than full sugar sodas. However I don't see why you would 'take up' drinking them? They ain't exactly perfect either...

Aspartame is the artificial sweetner in some diet drinks some studies have shown that it can cause cancer.

some more info here - http://www.321recipes.com/aspartame.html

No, they've LINKED it to cancer. And there's also increasing evidence to disprove the theories (which is all they are) about the risks of aspartame. There's a lot of scaremonering on the interweb about phenylalanine, aspartame and other sugar-substitutes, but a study done by the European Food Saftey Authority (EFSA) has found no conclusive evidence of a link between aspartame and cancer. The BBC and the EFSA have both issued reports on it. Personally I'd be more inclined to believe a peer-reviewed, published article from a reputable scientific source as opposed to anecdotal evidence on the web. But each to own.

I also heard that Aspartame is a appetite enhancer, so though they don't contain any calories in themselves, they do tend to make you eat more.

I don't know how true that is though - it's just something I read once. I also read the cancer-theory, so if that's not true then maybe it being an appetite enhancer isn't true either.

It still can't be good for you though - it still contains artificial ingredients.
