World Cup - Who's coming out of the groups?

Just wondering who everyone thinks will come out of the group stages. A lot of people have predicted via the BBC match-by-match predictor thing. I haven't done that, just predicting from a general hunch.
Will there be many surprises? I'd fancy one of the African debutants to do well...think I might throw a few quid down on the Ivory Coast to progress far.
Anyway, the teams I think will come out of the groups (no particular order, unless you want to specify) are in bold:

    Group A
    1. Germany
    2. Costa Rica
    3. Poland
    4. Ecuador

    Group B
    1. England
    2. Paraguay
    3. Trinidad & Tob
    4. Sweden

    Group C
    1. Argentina
    2. Ivory Coast
    3. Serb Mont
    4. Holland

    Group D
    1. Mexico
    2. Iran
    3. Angola
    4. Portugal

    Group E
    1. Italy
    2. Ghana
    3. United States
    4. Czech Rep

    Group F
    1. Brazil
    2. Croatia
    3. Australia
    4. Japan

    Group G
    1. France
    2. Switzerland
    3. South Korea
    4. Togo

    Group H
    1. Spain
    2. Ukraine
    3. Tunisia
    4. Saudi Arabia

Be interesting to come back when the group stage is done to see if anyone got them all, hard thing to do. Group C and E are probably the hardest to call.

Germany and poland should escape the clutches of Group A. Ecuador are horrible travellers and Costa Rica, while they can squeeze into second place, will most likely be eliminated by a Polish side that is more experienced than they were four years ago. I suspect that Paraguay will edge out Sweden for second place in group B. In group C, while I think that Argentina and Holland will do well if they get out of their group, I have a feeling that I just can't shake off that a young Holland team will be pipped at the post by the Ivory Coast.

Group D could be a close run affair but I expect Mexico and Portugal to progress. I can't make up my mind about Group E. Any of those teams could qualify. The USA are a good young side and they have experience in qualifying from tough groups before. The current scandal in Italy could see the Italians unfocussed towards the task at hand, but I still think that they will qualify. Ghana are no mugs and if they don't qualify, then they will definitely be responsible for denying another team that chance as well. The Czech's are still a very good team but I have a bad feeling about this campaign.

I fancy an exciting Japan side to beat Croatia and Australia to the punch in Group F. In group G, it will be tighter than many people might think IMO. I fear that South Korea's lack of home advantage will hinder them this time. Group H looks done and dusted.

    Group A
    1. Germany
    2. Costa Rica
    3. Poland
    4. Ecuador

    Group B
    1. England
    2. Paraguay
    3. Trinidad & Tob
    4. Sweden

    Group A
I'll have to go for Germany and Poland to qualify purly because I know next to nothing about how good (or poor) Costa Rica and Ecuador are.

    Group B
Tough group. England anyway. Tough call between Paraguay and Sweden. I'd love Sweden to get through but I can see it being Paraguay. T&T have no chance.

    Group C
    Argentina and Holland.

    Group D
Mexico and Portugal should ease through there. Iran could put up a good fight though. Angola haven't a hope.

    Group E
    Italy and Czech.

    Group F
This is the group of death in my opinion. All very good teams, all capable of taking points from each other. Brazil will be favourites but I expect Japan and the Aussies to do well too. Croatia could be a dark horse in the tournie too so this one is too hard to call. Logic says Brazil and Japan but it could just as easily be Croatia and Australia in this group.

    Group G
France and S.K/Swiss. Reckon S.K will get 2nd.

    Group H
    Spain and Ukraine.

I'm actually a bit worried Ghana might pull a suprise and qualify from their group. With Kuffour, Essien and Appiah they certainly have an excellent spine to work around.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,099 ✭✭✭✭WhiteWashMan

i agree with F being the hardest group.
the socceroos are looking good at teh moment off the back of a 1-0 win against greece and harry kewell looks like he will be fit along with tim cahill.

was checking them out the other day. didnt realise most of their players play england, germany or italy, with a couple in spain.

who knows with brazil, but should come out top.

croatia and japan can also be strong on their day, so i dont think there are any inconsistant teams there.

i dont think the world cup winners will come from this group though. i actually think england are going to win it. with holland my halland my dark horse in the race.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,719 ✭✭✭Bacchus

England winning really depends on how they get on with their strikers. Rooney still doubtful and if he manages to make an appearance won't be match fit. Walcott is a gamble. Crouch isn't going to get the goals. It's all on Owen really to pack a punch up front. Playing Gerrard off a sole striker could be genuis. We all know Gerrard can hammer in those long shots from around the edge of the box.

England and Brazil are the two teams I think have the best chance of winning with Japan, Portugal and Spain as outsiders. TBH though I don't really know much about any of the African or American(N & S) teams aside from Brazil and Argentina

I think the Argies (c The Sun) are in for a shock - the Dutch are actually in good form dressing room wise and Serbia/Montenegro are a very tough nut to crack I think.

Yeh, but that's cause he arrives late. I'm not sure if he has that ability to create space like a striker.
The same thing was tried with Fergie by Scholes and it failed, he had the same problems Gerrard will have.

I'm actually a bit worried Ghana might pull a suprise and qualify from their group. With Kuffour, Essien and Appiah they certainly have an excellent spine to work around.

well, i guess if ts 3 v 3, they should have a great shot at the world cup eh?

I just guess you wouldn't have commented on it if it was someone else posting. If I said I'm worried about Ghana because they have Kuffour, Essien and Appiah in their team then you'd have a point.

stop stalking me. and my point was that you need a full team rather than just 3 players.

Yeah, and it's a fair point. I never said I think they're going to do well just because they have 3 well known players though.

I don't know. They don't have any real world class players but they are still an excellent team and I'd be very suprised if they don't make the last 16. They got lucky with the draw though. They seem to play a load of friendlies. Even before a normal international friendly they'll usually play a club team as a warm up. If they can beat a half decent Azerbaijan 8-0 they must be good. :)

    Germany, Poland
    England, Sweden
    Argentina, Holland
    Portugal, Mexico
    Italy, Czech Republic
    Brazil, Japan
    France, Switzerland
    Spain, Ukraine

Group toppers on the left. I fancy Serbian & M to have a good chance, but I haven't seen any of the teams in that group play recently so its hard to say really
