Ok so I've only turned 18 and want to make a bet on the outcome of the World Cup but I've never made a bet before and honestly don't know what I'm supposed to do. Do I just go up to the counter and say 20euro on France please? I know this sounds stupid but please don't take the mick!
    Thanks!

Go into the bookies and get a docket and write on it 20 euro win France World Cup on it. Take docket and 20 euro and possible taxes to counter and the bet is made. You get a copy of the docket as proof of the bet.

    Good luck. :)

Go in and get a slip, look at the bets on the screen, fill out the slip. If it's not on a screen ask for the odds.
    Write it down and pay.
Now to bed with ya youngin or I'll get Cranmore after you.

Do you still have to pay tax on a bet? It's years since i backed anything.

I would also advise to get out of there as soon as youve placed your bet:D !
Dont be tempted by the various beautiful LCD screens with great odds or the endless amounts of betting you can make besides sports;)

Nah, betting tax was abolished by the people's champion Charlie McCreevy.

I worked in a bookies last summer and you had to pay tax, if you won then you got your tax back.

Just go into the Bookies put on the SLip
    World Cup
    France to Win outright
    put the odds below

and GIVE away your money ....NO TAX will be charged unless your in some illegal betting shop.

anyway the reason I say give your money away is that Mexico are goin gto win ...and are currently at 50/1 hehe

Why not bet online and then you don't have to pay tax at all as they are all in the Isle of Man of Jersey. Just click the buttons with the mouse and your good to go.

Everyone in After Hours - in fact, all over boards.ie - is too eager to give their opinion. So eager, in fact, that barely anybody reads the replies before making their own response. Hence so many stupid and/or pointless replies in this thread (amongst all the others).

But this is old news. The dolt population increases exponentially every year.

Now, I didn't bother to read what CuLT said(as per usual), first line was ok, but I agree.

Betting €20 on France is money down the drain! They wont win, whereas Brasil most likely will.

Why not try spread that €20 over a number of smaller bets, i.e. on a game per game basis. This said, I don't bet myself as it's a fools game. A fools game, I tells ya!!!

Well said. The odds for outright win of the tourny are too short. Split that €20 over a couple of games.

You definatly have to pay betting tax. It was gone for a while but its back again. I dont know the amount, i think its something like 5%. Although maybe some bookies still have it abolished.

I'm a betting novice myself as I've only ever betted twice since I turned 18. The first time, I went to the bookies close to the corner of Castle St and High St, beside the monument of Lady Erin.

All I did was go in and check the odds on one of the big screens (I was betting on Milan to win the Champions League). Once I saw that the odds were favourable, I went up to the counter and asked to put €10 on Milan to win the competition. The woman behind the counter took my cash, took out a slip of paper, wrote down the details and handed me the betting slip.

If you have any questions for them, they should be very helpful. They were any time I went to them anyway.

    Quiet you. :p

The first one actually did turn out well, I made the bet in 2003 when they won the competition. I put another tenner on them to repeat the trick in 2004 but a 4-0 loss in Spain ended that. Thank God I didn't bet on them for 2005, I'd be in an even worse humour than I was with Liverpool's victory alone. :(

I'll use the same defence as Fanny Cradock that the F is below the R.
