Hard drive problems...

    right, so heres the thing.

I have 3 hard drives i want running in my machine.

    One 80gb Maxtor (Master)
    One 200gb Maxtor (slave)
    One more 200gb Samsung(other slave)

    So,

i have my 80gb on the end of the 80-Ide primary cable jumpered as master
i have the 200gb Maxtor on in the middle of the 80-ide cable without a jumper and than
i have the other 200gb on the end of the 40-ide cable jumpered as slave.
(i dont have a cd attached)

Now, when i boot up (which is seldom as there seems to be another problem which means i have to "jump start" the pc my pushing the powerup button a few times) i get an error about one of the 80-pin ide cables not being connected. Anyway, sometimes i get by that, but unfortunately when i get Xp up and running, only my 2 maxtors are seen by windows. Theres no sign at all of old Samsung.

This is quite annoying as i have a fair bit of data i want to get up and sorted. Anyone got any reasons or help they can give me or have i done something stupid.Im almost 100% sure that there is nothing physicaly wrong with the samsung.

Should really only have 2 drives on one IDE slot.

Can you not move one to another IDE slot?

To be honest, this looks like a pretty straight-forward case of "lots of peripherals, not enough power to have em all going".

What's the output of your PSU?

    450watt q-tec!
I suppose it could be faulty but i wouldnt have thought that was the problem.

The jumpers sound wrong. With 2 disks on one cable, you need one as master and the other set as slave. Then the one disk on the other cable should be master (unless there's a different jumper for "single drive").

Alternatively, put all the drives on cable select.

Having incorrect drive settings like that can cause erratic booting. Check your BIOS settings to see if it's auto-detected everything right - I've seen some AMI BIOSes won't auto-detect unless you actually go to the BIOS setup menu.

Also, check that all the drives are actually spinning up. I've seen older PC's having a fit with 3 HDDs in them, but not with anything higher than a PIII.
