    Hey all,
I have just replaced by old PC with a laptop and am wondering what to do with the old one. Is it generally accepted that old PC's (7 yrs old) should be disposed of? I mean is the PC worth selling or are the parts worth keeping?

    It has 8GB HD (thats 8 not 80), 256mbRam.

    Thanks,
    Jeff

I donated my old one to the local church, they where delighted.

Maybe a local School or some old relations, may want it!!

Parts are always worth something, failing that, you could give it away to someone who doesn't have a PC. Just becuse its old doesn't mean it can't be used - it could probably even be upgraded for a few quid and then used as a light multimedia pc, simple net browsing/word processing/listen to music or some such. I normally use older PCs as lan computers - any old computer made in the last 8 years can run games like Counter Strike, Unreal Touranment, Day of Defeat etc grand....

What kind of other specs is it? What CPU? Something like a Pentium II or AMD K6 isn't as useless as you think - and that's loads of RAM for a PC of that age! They can be used for remenial tasks like a firewall, intranet http server, or a terminal for some remote desktop system (even a P166 is sufficient for Windows Remote Desktop). And as Havok said, CS and UT if it has any sort of graphics card ^_^

It may not be of any use to you, and may not be worth much (personally, I wouldn't pay anything for a PC older than 4 years old), but someone will find a use for it.

Most PC's are fine for running wordprocessing and a database. Depending on spec you might be able to get it on the web aswell.

Agree with the suggestion for using it as a firewall, we have an ancient gateway box running smoothwall (free) and works really well, been up and running without a problem since the last time we cut the power in the house to do so electrical work.
