you could try the ayh (youth hostel) on mason. it was about 20 dollars a night when i stayed there about 2 years ago, you can get twin rooms and it is very clean, safe and central. cant remember how long they let you stay tho but i recon a week would be fine. also if you stay a certain amount of nights (4 i think) then you get the next night free.

You can try the residential hotels all around the city very cheap and safe ...
very central too ...We stayed in The Gates Hotel for a summer during college and it was mental fun...it's located on the corner of Ellis and Powell..at the time it was 250 dollars a month I think...just off union square too.

I have been there before and can recomend USA Hotels in San Fransisco. I am heading back there myself in September and will be staying there again. Avoid the the YHA im the city center the one in Union Square is ok but the city center one is in a bad area. USA Hostels is by far the best here is the web link

Have a look at the Adelaide, fairly central in a decent enough area, cheap and run by irish people. Some of the best hostel facilities I've ever seen too.
