Sigma 70/200 fix?

I was doing a mate a favour today taking some product pics and managed to drop my Sigma 70-200 2.8 EX while taking it off the tripod. Dropped onto concrete, the filter took some damage, not much considering, but the lens no longer Auto focuses. It will manually focus.Luckily I can hear no bits rattle around inside. I imagine I have a very expensive fix ahead of me. I bought the lens in Cons, must be 4/5 years ago now, I assume they would send it back to Sigma. Has anyone got a lens fixed by Sigma? did the lens work as well as before the damgage? was it mega expensive.I'm just thankfull that I took the 20D off the tripod before I dropped the lens, could have been disasterous.

it's about €800 yeah? I'd say you'd be almost better off buying a new lens.. you'll be ripped of on the labour costs..

I was quoted by canon, €300 from a broken screen...

I'm gonna go with a new lens too...I've had to bring in 2 lenses over the past few years, and both times was told "Gonna cost as much to buy a top notch one off the internet"

I feared as much, damit.Ah well, I may bring it in just to confirm, it will do as a long manual lens with a converter if a fix is too expensive. Thanks lads.

You would be far better taking it to the place in portabello or even the one on dame street, the guy in portabello will probably tell you straight up what you are looking at, conns use one of those and add on there own little extra charge basically.

Incidentally, what mount is it? if you do end up replacing it I might be interested in taking it off you for a bit. Or (sorry this is off topic) does anyone know where you can buy dead lenses?

If you really can't use it again ,why not give it the similar bang again.

If boxers are knocked out ,a slap usely gets them out of it.
I'm sure if you wait ,someone will come up with something.

It's a Canon mount and no I don't think I'll be getting rid of it. Are you sure Cons use that crowd in portabello, I would have thought it would be sent to Sigma, wherever that is.I'm thinking of replacing it with the Canon 70-300 is lens, 490 or something in Ac photo including Canon rebate.
The sigma will do for a back up.
Oh I see the Sigma has been replaced with a new version, over a grand in AC, god knows what it would be here.

(OT but) - Wait, wait - you took the Canon off the tripod before you dropped the lens. But you say "managed to drop my Sigma 70-200 2.8 EX while taking it off the tripod."

yes, the tripod mount is on the lens. Maybe I should explain, my tribod, a manfroto, uses a mount that connects to the lens or camera and clips into the head of the tripod, I took the body off because it's a bit tight trying to get off with it attached, I flicked the release clip and the lens/ mount came off and fell and with it a 20 year career of never ever breaking a piece of camera equipment.
