Avoid the Pennsylvania Hotel, it's a kip

I stayed in the Pennsylvania a few years ago and while it's really old fashioned and absolutely enormous, it is central to everything (across the road from MSG and 100 metres from Empire State) and it's one of, if not, the cheapest hotel in Midtown Manhattan.

I've stayed in a few others which were much more expensive (boss paying :D ) and very central but for two weeks the Pennsylvania will cost about $1500. All the others will be much more expensive

I stayed in a place called Hotel Riverside Studios, its on West 71st Street, about a block from 72nd subway station (The one that runs all the way to Time Square). Cost was about 60 Euro a night. Hotel rooms were clean, fridge, sink, comfy bed, TV, but the bathrooms were shared between 4 rooms. But if you want cheap, you won't get any cheaper!

To be central to most of the sightseeing stuff in manhattan you ideally want to be staying somewhere south of 57th street (southern entrance to central park) and between 10th and Lexington Avenues.

But as the subway is so good and the possibility of getting lost is nil it doesn't really matter where you stay.

However, do remember that if you intend walking from your hotel to wherever, the heat and humidity in NYC in the summer is chronic!

Stayed in the clarion on 42nd and 5th. Close to most places and the subway takes care of the rest. Also close to grand central which made it easy to get to hotel from the airport. Cant remember it being too expensive(for new york that is)

Check with Tripadvisor.com -- prob the best site for getting info

Helmsley Midtown is a pretty good compromise of quality and value.

depend how much you are willing to spend I stayed in the ramada inn newyorker which was reasonably priced and was a reasonable hotel located on 38th and 8th(?). The best i stayed in was probably the Hotel edison it is located on times square at 48th and 6th (?) was nice hotel, great location great staff.
At the other end of the pricelist istayed in a hotel in 113th street up near harlem (was perfectly safe) and a subway away from most things but was cheap as chips and comfortable. (can think of the name right now...)

EDIT: the pennsylvania has been refurbisehed recently and is supposedly very nice
