Well when you plug the cable in does windows change from having a "cable unplugged" icon in the systray to one showing a connection?

It might be a software problem preventing connection rather than physical problem to do with cable.

Is the network card enabled by your OS?

If you're on XP, go Start > Settings > Control Panel > Network Connection > right-click on Local Area Connection and check Enable

It may be that your Network Card is actually turned off.

un fortunately there is no "cable unplugged" icon there to change in the first place
nothing happens to the syst tray at all when I connect the cable.

seems like a setting - but which one ??? :)

    righto.
Start -> Control Panel -> network Connections.

See if your network card is listed. If so right click it and choose "enable". If it's already enabled, "disable" will be listed in which case no need to do anything.

Once enabled, right click and choose properties. And tick "show icon in notification area when connected".

Now you should see an icon on the bottom right showing connection status.

there is no network as such but just a cat5 connection on the mother board.

Are these two connections different ??
Do I need a separate network card instead of the mother board ??

    MB is - this
Details - Networking Network adapter - Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, Gigabit Ethernet

    thx folks for your help.
will update tomorrow when I get look at the ideas above.

crossover or straight? Cable just might not work with whatever hardware you're connecting it with.

Check to see if the wires in the heads of both sets of cable are the same. If they're not, there's your answer.
