Bib shorts vs regular shorts - difference?

I was on holiday recently and the local sports shops only had bib shorts. As I'd never worn bib shorts before I decided against buying them in case they didn't work for me.

What are the advantages/disadvantages of bib shorts over regular cycling shorts?

    Can't think of any really.
Maybe if you have a long torso they might ride up a bit.

IMO bib shorts are much more comfortable than normal shorts
as you don't have the problem of the chamois inserts shifting forwards.
Also, with bib shorts you don't have a tight waistband which sticks into your stomach and hinders breathing and swallowing food/drink. Oh yeah, and bib
shorts keep your kidneys warmer too.

Bib shorts keep you alot warmer and do fit better, but there is nothing wrong with normal cyclying shorts as long as they fit. It's down to a personal choice over which makes you look gayer

One bad thing about bib shorts, its alot more complicated to go for a p*ss in bib-shorts.

That being said bib shorts are alot more comfortable!

you will also look a bit funny for a few minutes while you get dressed until you put your jersey on ;)

...normal cycle shorts tend to roll down a bit if you're 40 and struggling to keep the beer belly at bay!

I go for Bib shorts everytime though as King Raam says you do look funny getting dressed - looked in the mirror the other day and though it was a victorian wrestler - All I need now is a handlebar moustache (but that would be entirely too gay..)

Unless you've got abs like this guy. Then you might get away without a jersey.

After all these positives about bib shorts I'm sorry I didn't buy a pair when on holidays. They were e55 and had a good pad. The loud "Italia" graphics did put me off a bit too.

Strange question I have here and I accept that I may be shot down immediately but here it goes anyway! What the heck:

I have two pairs of really good quality Giordana bib shorts lying around never being used because I accidentally bought the wrong size, medium instead of small. The question it this, would anybody consider buying bib shorts that were used a couple of times? Of course, I know they are a very personal thing but even if they were washed over and over and sterilized etc? It's just they are such good quality that I'd hate to see them go to waste, I would prefer to see someone get some use out of them if they fitted them properly. Maybe it's just a bit too much, let me know what you think before I go ahead and try to sell them! Cheers. (Fingers crossed, just waiting for the abuse...haha )

Actually, I've a similar problem: pair of bib tights (too large for me) to offload. Used once. Mods - I know a thread hijack / ad is probably against rules, but as H:B says above, I'd prefer someone to get some use from them. What to do?

You should just hold onto them for when you get old and fat.

No doubt you'll get flak from some posters. Many people have all sorts of hang-ups about the human body and its functions. In years gone by such hang-ups made some sense but these days they're mostly irrational as they don't take into account modern developments in hygiene such as disinfectants, detergents, washing machines, etc.

Once the shorts were properly washed and sterilised and all the nasty germs have been terminated, I'd have no problems buying used shorts if they were in good condition and a reasonable price. Having said that, I recently spent €90 on a pair of Campag shorts from Cycleways after reading the comments on this forum so I don't think I could justify buying another pair of shorts.

My friends saw me in my Liquigas bib-shorts and nicknamed me Borat for the weekend :( I do prefer bib though because my normal shorts can move around more when I'm getting up down off the saddle, the bibs will readjust where as the regulars I have to play with myself.

I have sold lightly used shorts before that didn't fit me. I wouldn't have a problem buying them either.

Bibs are far superior to normal shorts (I have both), mostly because you don't have the hem to interfere with the hem of your jersey - riding up is not an issue.

Me neither. TBH any bibs you've bought might have been tried on already (in shop or returned), so there's no point getting weird about it.

Without getting too hung up on it (no pun intended), surely you don't go commando when trying on a pair of shorts in a shop??

Of course you do - how else would you have any notion how comfortable they're going to be on the bike?

I do a little run around the shop also, just to make sure they bed in OK.

I relish that Freddie Mercury moment before every ride.

I always make a point of slicking back my hair and singing into the hairbrush for a few minutes.

Sometimes I even draw a little moustache. Is that going too far do you think?

I'll only know how comfortable they are on the bike after I've cycled a few hundred km's with them on. In the shop I would wear something 'light' underneath so that I would have a fair idea how they fit.

No. I have a homemade from old leg-hair moustache that I stick on. I also engage in some felching.

    Is that going too far?

Alright cheers, thanks so much guys for actually being reasonable in your responses and not just shooting me down. Now it's time to see who would be interested in a pair of Medium sized Giordana Tenax Laser A413 Bib Shorts in Black, do you think €40 each, half the price I paid for them would be a reasonable price to ask for? (I originally paid €160 for the two of them)

I've found it really hard to find ladies bib shorts at a reasonable price anywhere. Assos are a bit out of my price range!

Stick 'em in the adverts subforum, then we can shoot you down. ;)

They look like very decent shorts, I imagine they would get snapped up at €40 if you have only worn them once or twice.

I got a pair of these on holidays myself. They were in or around that price alright. They are made by Sportful and are far and away the most comfortable pair of bibs I have. Great quality.

I was a reluctant bib purchaser initially but now I wouldn't wear anything else. My trick is to buy one size bigger, in my case XXL/6, as then I don't suffer the "squashing" syndrome.

As mentioned, stick them in adverts, but I'd definitely take a pair off your hands.
