    Hi all,

A friend of mine has a problem with thier IE in Windows XP. They can browse any website but when it comes to ordering stuff or booking flights etc etc the "this page cannot be displayed blah blah blah" comes up and you cant go any further. Im no computer geek either are they so if someone could tell me how to fix this i would be very grateful. BTW I would be telling them what to do over the phone so if you could make it in plain english so I can explain it to them easliy enough.

    Thanks

PS. Ive looked through this site and i couldnt locate a similar post with the same problem!!!!

Do all the sites start with HTTPS:// instead of http:// ?

If so it may be a firewall problem - but that's unlikely

If they have broadband it might be easier to get them to try htp://www.opera.com as an alternative to IE ( if they aren't clued up they are better off with it than with FireFox )

Unless someone has a better idea it might be an idea to get them to run download and run spywareblaster www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html just in case there is some junk on the PC.

I'd echo the try Opera/FireFox solution, and would recommend the excellent Spybot Search & Destroy as an anti-spyware tool to throw in with it too.

It might also be - but unlikely, given that they're on XP - that they simply have a slightly outdated version of IE. You'll notice that one of the suggestions IE will fire at you is a 128-bit Security warning, yadda yadda yadda. Perhaps try downloading the latest beta of IE too, but I'd imagine that the first option would be to try another browser, and after that to check that the firewall isn't rejecting https:// addresses as the Capt'n has said.

It's usually (a) Proxy settings or (b) misconfigured firewall, (c) outdated browser, (d) browser settings...

    (a)
Proxy Tools -> Internet Options -> Connection -- proxy settings. Check that the proxy is used for https:// as well as http:// (If a proxy is used. Otherwise, ignore.)

    (b)
(most likely) What firewall are they using? If it's Norton Internet Security, check on Symantec.com for step by step instructions re: how to disable it. Disable it temporarily for testing purposes. Then re-enable,and using the information on-line re-configure their firewall.

    (c) Outdated web broswer - see above posts. (Least likely)

    (d)If browser settings:
In IE: Tools -> Internet Options -> Advanced -> Click Restore Defaults.

It could be something very simple like the auto POP up blocker which is built into IE or the likes of the Google toolbar. You can check this very easily by "Holding down the Ctrl key while clicking on the problem link" If that lets you go to the page, you will know that it's a POP up setting.
