Yeah, I can't agree with that Scott,

I think it was a better than usual event.
Some great finishes, especially Fisher-Wiman and Lister-Sakara.
    Some funky stuff there.

Royce didn't look himself at all me thinks...anyone hear if he made any comments after?

Royce looked exactly as I expected him to, why did you think he wasn't himself?

Mark axe kicked the correct. Royce is a one dimensional fighter and the fight went as expected.. hughes is just a better fighter, a more rounded fighter.. I respect Royce for what he's done in the world of MMA, promoting jiu-jitsu - But the sport has evolved and it took alot of guts to fight Matt IMO. Fair play, but I expected no less.

Ultimate Fighting Champion Matt Hughes got the opportunity of a lifetime when supermodel Cindy Crawford walked into his dressing room to get her chest autographed.

    Cindy.... you're a dirty slapper :p

I don't think Royce even tried... couple of half hearted kicks and a big paycheck to lose!

lol - yes whatever makes it easier to accept:D

royce showed everyone a decade ago the importance of adding ground fighting to your game
now matt has shown the need to have a well rounded game plus conditioning

stand up - clinch - ground

Makes what easier to accept??? I thought it was a crap fight.... expecting the announcement of a re-match any day now... UFC.... all about money now. (won't stop me watching it though  )

I thought he might have a least made an effort... and I wasn't up for either of them!

He did make a 100% effort. He was just totally overwhelmed by an all round superior fighter. Total mismatch.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,639 ✭✭✭john kavanagh

    ouch, thats harsh maeve:confused:

damo is 100% spot on the money. kinda like saying, in their first match, that shamrock didnt 'try' getting submitted in less than 1 min. no, he was just totally out matched.....as royce was against matt.

He did make an effort. Ability and effort are two different things, anyone else would of tapped with that keylock and would of tapped when their back was taken and they were pummeled. Royce absorbed it, he was just outclassed. To even consider that he didn't give any effort shows you're not really knowledgeable about the sport of MMA, it's evolution and Royce in general.

What's harsh??? UFC? seems to be more about which celebs are there to be seen watching the fights these days.

I thought the fight was crap....that's just my opinion! Royce didn't even try to escape on the ground, his legs were in the air most of the time.... I've seen him get out from under a huge sumo wrestler!! Matt finished him off like he used to finish challangers off in the old days.... also I think Matts great (apart from the religious rubbish he goes on with).

...like I said it's my opinion and I've been watching Pride and UFC for yonks. The only one I saw using bjj was Matt and I thought he actually looked surprised that he wasn't getting a more difficult time. As for not tapping, Royce doesn't make a habit of it!

Whoa! Careful where you're swinging that handbag fella! You could take someone's eye out.

    Maeve,
Tonights homework: Go read up on Royce and write a 1,000 word essay on the evolution of mixed martial arts. There may be a pop quiz on Sunday morning.

There's a big difference between a sumo wrestler and a wrestler who's spent his life learning how to control the body. It's ok if you thought the fight was crap, I didn't think it was all that good either, but I don't think Royce "didn't even try".. He made the best out of what he could. Was I suprised that Matt controlled him so well on the ground? Yes and no.. I knew had a good ground game, I've seen him compete in Abu Dhabi and was aware of his grappling ability. But Royce did all he could, it just wasn't enough. In fairness, he lasted longer than alot of people hughes has fought. Including Joe riggs and Frank Trigg :)

As someone who admittedly has very limited knowledge of BJJ, I think its very unfair the way this fight is been viewed. Matt Hughes showed a great deal of skill against Royce and while he didn't get a sub on him, he more than matched him on the ground. Now, as a few of the guys have stated, this was an MMA bout, and naturally he finished it with strikes which is a perfectly acceptable way to finish a bout, (even did it myself in a bout with a BJJ guy:D). Whatever about his religious beliefs (and they are up to the person themselves, I mean a lot of boxers bless themselves), I did not like Matt Hughes prior to this fight but I thought he showed great humility in beating a legend.

Barry we will have to agree to disagree on this one. ;) I personally like Pride and normally have a hard time watching UFC. Why do I watch, because my friends order it on Payper view and I want to hang with them. I tell them its ****e as well. I would prefer to purchase an MMA League DVD and watch it. :D I liked the Dean Lister fight but I'm a Lister fan. Maybe the Mike Swick fight. I hear Royce collected 1.2 million USD and his wife is hot, so win or loose I don't know if its that big of a deal. I don't know if anyone has ever said Royce was good at Jiu Jitsu anyway, including himself. So remember everyone, Gracie Jiu Jitsu is ****e run out and sign up for the latest and greatest trends, wrestling and boxing.
