If you fancy a change from windows media player you could try vlc.

    Link here: LINK

It uses up barely any RAM and plays a lot of file types.

Will the avi play with VLC?

Lads, little explanation wouldn't go amiss; if he's asking about why WMP won't play "AVIs" and wants to "download something to fix it", not to mention not being able to understand a link to a download page that says "If you're not sure which you want, get this" in bold writing, he sure as hell doesn't know what VLC is.

    VLC will play most things.
You might just be missing a few codecs for Media Player.
    Download this: http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Codec_Pack_All_in_1.htm

There could be a problem with the avi file. Have you tried other files with windows media player and vlc?

If the movie is still downloading you won't be able to play it. AVI is fairly retarded, it needs to be fully downloaded.

The problem is gonna be a codec one. VLC is great. Get "Matroska Pack" as well.

If it's still not working, the file is prob ****ed.

AFAIK, like every other media player, VLC won't do squat unless you have right codecs ;)

all you need to do is, once the file is downladed, right click -> select properties - > choose the summary tab - > select advanced - > look @ the bottom under video - > then see what it says beside video compression - > below in red circle - > then google for that codec
like so th_21723_codec.JPG ignore the blue highlight

    vlc does it all

    no need for codecs

Actually VLC doesn't need codecs installed for DVDs or DivX/Xvid.
