PSP Modchip anyone?

    Maxconsole posted here yesterday claiming they had been sent news about an upcoming psp modchip.

    up_psp.jpg

    I have to say that weither or not such a modchip exists, that picture looks terribly fake.

    If the story is true this is a massive leap for the homebrew community, but also a massive aid to piracy - no matter who says otherwise.

    What do all your boards.ie psp users make of this possible development? I know myself that if there was a specialist who dealt with modifying psp's, and the hardware and cost installation wern't too high this could be a very tempting. Consider having a psp that was both 1.5 or even 1.0 for un-restricted homebrew, with the choice to switch to the laterst firmware to play the latest titles? Or how about a hackers own custom firmware, with revised user interface, improved support for video codec's and audio formats, various bundled homebrew apps, umd emulation, advanced eloader, wifi sniffer... the list goes on.

    I'd like to hear anyone elses thoughts on this.

    Seems to have been confirmed here and here

    Have to say this is starting to look very real, they are promising alot from the very outset.

    Features Announced:

    * Ultra reliable and feature rich Actel ProASIC Plus FPGA
    * Full Speed USB 1.1 ASIC onboard
    * Branded 32MB NAND flash onboard (same flash as used in PSP)
    * Stable and reliable flashing software freely available for download
    * Installation verification using flashing software
    * Ultra compact four layer PCB
    * High quality Japanese connectors
    * USB cable included
    * FPC cable included, reducing installation effort and improving shock resistance
    * Copper enamel wire included
    * Open platform development system for software developers
    * Installation has been optimized to fit entirely inside PSP
    * All PSP hardware versions/regions supported
    * User updatable flash
    * Low power consumption
    * Flash select via button press
    * Ultra compact PCB has been designed to avoid signal bounce

    The U.P. (Undiluted Platinum) is a flash replacement system for the PSP™ which allows the use of previous flash updates or custom firmware builds, opening up the possibility to run unsigned homebrew code on even the latest PSP systems. The U.P. contains 32MB NAND flash which is programmable from the PC via a high speed USB connection, using our user friendly software. You may boot the PSP from either its onboard flash or the flash contained on the U.P; the flash which is used is determined by a button press as the PSP is powered on (U.P. flash is used by default, hold L1 to use the PSP onboard flash)
    Since U.P. provides a secondary flash which the PSP can boot from, it can even be used to restore a PSP which has been "bricked".
    ^ this in itself is absolutly HUGE, granted it must be takedn with a pinch of salt, but anyone with a bricked psp would surley pay the guideline price of 75 euros, which, I think is a bargain to restore their handheld.

    I for one, am very excited.

    Yeah, this is real alright. Cant wait till it comes out. Even though I have a 1.5 I cant wait to see what the coders will do with the GUI. Very intersting indeed.

    what happens if sony update the firmware to counteract the chip?
    if its a hard mod then a soft detector could easily be written that would over ride it, no?

    We'll have to see. PS2 modchips couldn't be detected.

    my point is that ps2 didnt have updatedable firmware.
    who knows what soft detections could be brought in down the line.

    same process with xb360, no one knows what soft detection methods MS might use in future against people that install a mod chip.
    theyve hinted at blacklisting your machine on live services, suspending your gamer profile and other methods
    attitude seems to be "disable just enough to decrease enjoyment, not enough to force people to change brand"
    just look at WGA right now to see how theyre slowly bringing the boot down on pirated windows users.

    There's no point in something like this, It can already be done on a software level. Device Hook can load 2.5 firmware from within 1.0 or 1.5 firmware and also load Isos into 2.5.

    I can currently play The Sims 2 from UMD on my 1.5 with 2.5 loaded via DevHook using this method.

    Did you have to bump three seperate thread just to tell us about Devhook? And it doesn't work for firmware over 2.5

    Erm... it was appropriate to all three threads? That and it's only been released (and working properly) within the last few weeks so not many people would know about it yet.
