Villain in this hand plays in Cork. I have played with him before but don't know him well. He is aggressive and I think he is a winner in cash games. He has played one decent sized pot where he overlimped in MP and reraised a loose short stack with raggy KKxx, so he is probably looking to accumulate a lot of chips early. I don't think he knows who I am. He has seen me play one big hand where I slowplayed flopped quads on two streets, but mostly I have been tight and somewhat passive.

He has 5k of starting stack 7k. I have about 10k. Blinds 25-50 in the first level. 9 handed, 2 limpers, he raises to 275 in LP, I call in the SB with Aspade.gif A club.gif 6 spade.gifT spade.gif. Limpers call, 4 to the flop. Flop is A heart.gif 3spade.gif 3club.gif. Checked to villain who bets the pot 1100, I call, everyone else folds. Turn 5 diamond.gif. I weak lead 700, he calls. River 9diamond.gif. He has 2900 left, pot is 4700. What do I do now? How did I play the hand?

Check the river show more weakness, let him try steal it.

Thats a bad idea, he checks any Ace behind, and will almost never try to steal here.

More chance of getting chips if he bets.

    Bet a grand?

I pot and hope he has a house. The way you played it was very good, it looks like you have a 3, I like the turn weak lead.
I don't think Villain will call with K3xx if you bet the river, unless you bet small, you need Villain to have a house to get a call, so I think a river pot bet is fine.

What do you think he has? I think he has A3, 3xxx, and a decent chance of having nothing. What do I have? Surely I have 3xxx.

He cant call the turn with nothing. He should normally have Axxx, or 3xxx, or 24xx or something like that.

He sure as hell wasn't potting the flop with Quads. If I know who this player is I think he's good enough to fold everything but A3xx on the turn. I think you have a lot more to gain from betting the river and at this stage anything other than a pot bet is just too suspicious.

Well I checked the river. He thought for ages and pushed, I called and showed and he mucked.

When he raises preflop and bets the flop he is representing AA, he could definitely be doing this with any hand that warrants raising in the first place. When I lead the turn so weak I really think it screams of a 3 not wanting to be raised, trying to get to showdown cheaply, so I thought he would pick up on this and try to move me off it on the river, because most players are going to fold a naked 3 here. I wouldn't play a 3 this way, I think, but he doesn't know that.

If he has A3 he surely bets the river for value, if he has nothing he has to bluff (otherwise why call the turn?), so I only lose value when he has a 3 and checks behind. And even then he might not have been planning to call a big bet.

I don't think there's anything wrong with leading turn, then leading river, but after leading the turn so small I think checking the river is clearly better. If I was planning to bet the river I would have bet at least 1100 on the turn.
