ADSL Wireless Router to work with Ethernet RJ-45

    Hi,

I just got hold of an SMC ADSL WIRELESS ROUTER, now im not using an ADSL broadband connection, and fiddled with the configuration of the router as much as i could to have it transmit the internet connection wirelessly through one of the 4 lan ports, but was unusccessful. The router works perfectly as a switch i.e broadband works fine, when i connect it to the computer using an Ethernet cable to another port.

I do suspect that it may not be possible, but any ideas?

    Eh, what?

Are you trying to ask how to get the wireless working on the router?

Yes, sorry im asking if its possible to make the wireless internet connection work with the wireless ADSL router using a ethernet cable connection for broadband?

You're still not making sense. ;)

What I think you're trying to say is that you have your internet connection coming from some source (cable modem, Irish Broadband, etc) and this source is connected to the SMC router using an ethernet cable. You are asking if you can then connect to router wirelessly in order to access this source. That right?

AFAIK, this will work, but you need to provide some more info on your setup.

Who is your internet provider? What equipment do they provide you with? What ip address does the router have? Can you detect a wireless signal from the router? etc.

Give us more info and we will be able to help you.

Sorry again, but yea my internet connection is coming from a cable modem i.e Digiweb Metro wirless antenna (on the roof) hooked onto the one of the LAN ports of the wireless ADSL router. The router doesnt seem to have an IP beside the 192.168.2.1 (not that i can see anyway), its an SMC router (Barricade 7904WBRA). The wireless card detects the connection perfectly but doesnt let me browse the internet, that is the problem. Although when i connect the computer on of the other LAN ports with a cable it connects and lets me browse the internet perfectly. Hope this is better :)

    Thanks in advance!

Ah all comes clear... AFAIK, you can indeed use this router even though your internet connection is thru a LAN port and not a WAN port. Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I'm going to go with this assumption.

My first guess is that either you're not being assigned an ip address when you connect ur pc wirelessly, or that you get an ip address, but your settings for dns or gateway are incorrect.

So if you can do the following (you will need to note the output of 3 and 7)

    1) Connect PC using a cable to router.
    2) Start -> run. Enter "Cmd" and press enter.
    3) When command prompt opens enter "ipconfig /all" and press enter.
    4) Disconnect cable
    5) in command prompt enter "ipconfig /release"
    6) Connect to router using wireless.
    7) In command prompt enter "ipconfig /all"

Post the results of 3 and 7 back here.

Well it connects wirelessly when i assign the wireless adapater an IP address in the 192.168.x.x subnet, otherwise it wouldnt even connect to it. I have no clue about the DNS server and gateways, so thats a possible problem as well  .

ok your settings when u connect with cable look fine. But you can see that when you try using wireless you don't get assigned an ip address.

Have you WEP or WPA enabled? Any MAC filtering?

You say you've tried a static ip address in 192.168.X.X range. Can you connect when you do this? What did you set gateway and DNS to when you did this?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 127 ✭✭timmy69

Disabled WEP/WAP and MAC address filtering for testing purposes. Wireless connects when in the 192.168.X.X. Actually it was assigned by the router by DHCP itself just now (worked), when i connected it and is connected to the router at the moment. Now im guessing that the DNS and gateway might need to be assigned for Digiweb but their DNS server is different everytime i run ipconfig /all and not to sure about the gateway, which is 83.147.165.1 right now.

The DNS server right now 83.147.160.2

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,541 ✭✭✭irlrobins

Well normally you just configure the router with the DNS info and then set the gateway and dns server for each client to the ip address of the router. So in your router config enter 83.147.160.2 and 83.147.160.3 as the dns. Then on your PC set gateway and dns to the router's ip (192.168.2.1). see how you get on with that.

That didnt seem to work, the wireless adapter is connected to the router but no internet browsing.

ok let's see where the bottle neck is. Connect wirelessly.

    Open a command prompt (Start->run->cmd)
    1) ping 192.168.2.1 (the router)
    2) ping 83.147.160.2 (digiweb dns)
    3) ping www.google.ie

Post which pings fail and which succeed.

ok your PC can reach the router ok, but can't reach the dns servers. On the pc set the dns to 83.147.160.2 and 83.147.160.3 instead of router ip. Might be an idea to restart PC after this. Then repeat the second and third ping test and tell us if they fail or not.

After removing all the DNS servers and gateways from the wireless adapter.

Getting a Wan connection icon in network connections, was having look at router settings and noticed that NAT is enabled, is that supposed to be enabled?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,541 ✭✭✭irlrobins

yea that's fine, in the normal course of things that should be causing a problem.

No prob. Let me check something out and I'll get back to you.

Hey, was talking to another user about this (Cheers Karoma). I'm just wondering now if the reason why it works using ethernet cable is because the PC is on the same switch as the internet connection. But when you use the wireless this is not the case so a connection is not possible (i.e. wireless will only work if internet connection is on WAN).

Can you confirm that you had manually configured your wireless connection with an ip address of 192.168.2.X, set the gateway to 192.168.2.1 and the dns servers to 83.147.160.2 and 83.147.160.3. See attached pic. And that this did not work?

Just spoke to Digiweb support, their Thompson Cable modem doesnt allow traffic being forwarded through the ADSL modem to wireless connections. :(
They assigned me a Static IP as part of the package but say it will only work on one MAC address. They say i can reconfigure this with them once i purchase a Wireless broadbad modem.

ok it's as i thought. Guess you need to buy a router that has a ethernet WAN port and not a DSL one. Linksys WRT54G is my recommendation. It can handle MAC address cloning if required.

Sorry for all that run around!

Yeup, that did not work :(
