Noisy machine (harddrive?)

I've noticed recently that my computer makes an awful lot of noise. I assume it's the hd, as it sounds like a spinning noise. I can hear it from 3 rooms away and when I'm watching stuff on my computer, it can drown out the sound quite a bit.

As I said, it sounds quite like a spinning noise. It revs up, makes a loud noise for about 10-20 seconds, then spins down. A minute later, it starts up again. It bears no relation to what I'm doing on the machine at the time, as I can hear it when I'm not even in the room.

I've tried defragging, etc, to no avail. Anything I should be checking for? I able to open my machine, etc, but architecture has moved on quite a bit since my tech support days.

Are you sure its not the cpu fan. I had one once that was very noisy. A bit of bluetack strategically placed stopped it vibrating.

My CUP fan rattles like mad on start up and sometimes needs a "thawck" on the case to shut it up.

It could possibly be your CD/DVD drive, they tend to rev up a bit, eject any cd that's in there.

PC Noise sources Loudest First (in general anyway)

CD/DVD drive with CD in spinning up. Eg my samsung Dual layer DVD burner is a is a pig.
Graphics Card Fan - 90% of modern GFX cards have shítty noisey fans.
    Cpu/Case Fans.
Harddrive. (generally loudest noise is a clicky type from the head seeking rather than a spinny type)

Basically unless you have already take steps to silence the rest I would lay odds on it not being your Harddrive but one of the others.
