i have made a strat for my leaving cert. the other day I started to put the first string [e] the. When I started to tune it i noticed that the string wasn't going on right. the string wasn't touching any of the frets below the the fifth fret it was going away from the neck, if you know what i mine. Is there their anything that I can do to fix problem. keep mind that the examinor is coming to the school on monday

What do you mean by not touching the frets? Can you take a photo of it? Is the string hitting the frets above 5 (ie 5-22)?

I'm pretty sure the string shouldn't actually be touching the frets. It only touches the frets when you press down on it...sorry to state the obvious

no the string is going over the fifth to the 22 fret at all.

You tell that examiner of yours to leave you alone - I will give you a job. ;)

i think he means that the string is off the edge of the neck after the fifth fret

AH! What is the low E string like? Can you take a photo of it?

Sounds like you didnt line up the bridge/neck properly tbh. Or routed the neck pocket inaccurately. If so, all you can do is reposition the bridge and do your best to plug up the holes, this is a big problem obviously if you used a strat trem

Here is a photo of the position the string is in. It's pretty much what I've tried to explain to you. Sorry for the confusion

Take a picture of your bridge

Does the string come out of the bridge and go around the volume knob by any chance?

Ah, no need for that. I know a few people that made guitars for their Leaving Cert.

I guessing some of that grime around the frets at least. ;)

If you just made that guitar, how did it get so much playing wear with a neck like that?

The bridge is the key here. I will be very surprised if this isn't a piss take.

He may have taken the fretboard from another guitar?

The body is scratched and has playing wear too

The base of the neck is rather irregular shaped, but until we see the bridge this is a load of bollox tbh

this isn't any piss take. that picture was taken from a strat that i brought. i was just showing ye what i was going on about. as the guitar is in school i can't take any picture of the bridge.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,848 ✭✭✭✭Doctor J

What is the string coming out of? Why is it so far away from the other strings at the bridge?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,592 ✭✭✭Ancient1

that picture was taken from a strat that i brought.

I thought you made one, man!

    ??

Are you trying to say that's a stock pic? If that is the case, what's with the string?

no he's trying to imitate the problem on a strat that he has at home, as with the wood work project they have to be left in the school so they know you didn't get any outside help or you just didn't buy everything off warmoth or something like that and assembled yourself :p

Ah right that makes a bit more sense.

If all the strings are off centre you can do two things really. Either 1-reset the neck more in the direction of the bass strings which will align all of the strings more towards the centre of the neck or, 2-if the neck pocket is correct, move the bridge towards the bass side.

i thought that was wrong that the bridge was more over to the treble side. Thanks for the help doctor j
