HERE IS A MATH TRICK SO UNBELIEVABLE THAT IT WILL STUMP YOU.

    1. GRAB A CALCULATOR. (YOU WON'T BE ABLE TO DO THIS ONE IN YOUR
    HEAD)
    2. KEY IN THE FIRST THREE DIGITS OF YOUR MOBILE PHONE NUMBER (NOT THE
AREA CODE (not the 087/086/085 bit))
    3. MULTIPLY BY 80
    4. ADD 1
    5. MULTIPLY BY 250
    6. ADD THE LAST 4 DIGITS OF YOUR PHONE NUMBER
    7. ADD THE LAST 4 DIGITS OF YOUR PHONE NUMBER AGAIN.
    8. SUBTRACT 250
    9. DIVIDE NUMBER BY 2

    DO YOU RECOGNIZE THE ANSWER?

    You have to add the last 4 digits together as one number, + xxxx instead of + x + x + x + x
that's where I did it differently

it works, you should get your mobile number back

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 305 ✭✭Guy Incognito

    It's just maths :p

Multiplying the original number by 20000 (80*250), adding 250 (1*250) and taking it away again and adding the last digits twice.

So now there's twice the mobile number.

Yes, I am in work and I am bored.

Any number in that form is a multiple of nine.
It also has to be between 18 and 81.
Look through 18, 27, 36, 45 etc and you'll see they all have the same symbol.

So you pretty much enter all the digits of your mobile number, and it gives it back to you. Amazing!

    Another one:
    Cyclic number - if you multiply the number 142857 by anything between 1 and 6 the answer contains the same digits. e.g. 142857 x 3 = 428571 and 142857 x 6 = 857142
If you multiply the same figure by 7 the answer is 999,999.

Look at Pythia's post - multiples of 9 all have the same symbol.

*edit: oops, left it too long, it's been answered twice already :D

Here is an interesting maths trick:
Any 3 digit number multipled by 7, then 11, then 13 becomes a duplicate of itself

    e.g.
    123 * 7 * 11 * 13 = 123123
    555 * 7 * 11 * 13 = 555555 etc.

    That's cos you're multiplying it by 1001.
So it's multiplying it by 1000, then adding the same number onto the end.
    Ie 456*1001 =
    456,000
    +456
    = 456,456

    Time for advanced algebra then!

    from http://www.murderousmaths.co.uk/games/primcal.htm

if you square ANY prime number bigger then 3, then subtract 1, the answer always divides by 24!

apparently this is because (6n+1)2 = 36n+12n+1. So (6n+1)2 -1 = 36n+12n. This factorises to 12n(3n+1). Either n or (3n+1) must be even, therefore the whole expression must be divisible by 24. (this makes my brain hurt :( )

As was pointed out, it is basic algebra. Alot of it is there to confuse you and make it look more impressive. When you simplify it you multiply the first 3 numbers by 10,000, then add the last 4 numbers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,934 ✭✭✭egan007

    AMAZING!
you give a computer your mobile phone number and it gives it back to you!!!
    WOW!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 81,220 ✭✭✭✭biko

    Apparently if you use the numbers 4 8 15 16 23 42 you can win money :p

It really annoys me when non-Americans say "math". In future, I will only accept either "maths" or "mathematics". "Candy", "cookie", "pants" and "mom" are also not acceptable.

    Say no to Americanisims!

Wait, what do you propose we use instead of "mom"? Ma? Mother? Mam?

Pants are pants. We're no more English than we are American. Neither is our native language, so why conform to either's standards? I'll give you math and candy, though. And calling the footpath the sidewalk, and calling petrol gas. That's just stupid.

    Jam = Jelly :(
Gas is actually a liquid lol (I know it's short for Gasoline but still :D )

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,245 ✭✭✭✭Fanny Cradock

It may not be our native language, but it is the one that is predominately spoken but the populace. Therefore, I'd prefer to speak it "correctly", i.e. the country for where it originated from.

As for Mam or ma, as far as I know, they are pretty much inner city (Dublin) expressions. Mom on the other hand is without doubt an Americanism.

How can you get excited by this? You enter in your mobile number in a calculator and it just displays it back to you. Big fuking deal.

can you do it with the 077 bit or is that the area code? or should i do 0.77?
