I've a bad moss problem in my lawn and also on my tarmac drive, I spray the tarmac with every know moss killer I even use roundup but it keeps coming back year after year, even if I brush it up

The lawn is very bad, at the moment i'm racking it up and going to put down some moss killer mixed with fertiliser and when some lawn seed.

Does anybody know just how to get rid of moss from a lawn??

I had to do the same thing last night.
I don't think there is anything you can do to stop it coming back each year. It tends to grow in the shaded areas. Most annoying.

You need to change the PH of your soil by spreading it with Iron. This will kill the moss. Iron is usually contained in lawn sand (available in any garden centre, DIY, hardware) or you can just buy a bag of iron itself from some agri suppliers.

I had this problem a while ago and got some help here > http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2054911521

I also got a 3 in 1 Weedkiller and fertilizer, it comes in pellet form and I scattered it about while it was raining. Within days the moss turned black and now it's all gone. Thank God.

    Hi all,

Read the other link to this aswell so some suggestions cover both threads.

First LIME would be the substance of choice to change soil pH it puts loads of Calcium in soil and this aids a process known as floculation which in turn promotes the formation of agregates and this improves drainage (are we asleep yet  ).

Moss indeed likes wet damp conditions so improved drainage should help the situation. If the garde is real bad you could run afew french drains through it though I would try the lime route first.

Second DO NOT cut grass short, this lets light down to moss and moss does need light to grow. By keeping grass long 2.5 - 3 inches you will shade out the moss and will die Ha Ha Ha.

Suppose the key is there is no easy magic fix just keep working on the drainage/aeration keep the lawn fed to keep her growing (remember if you are cutting and removing the cuttings you are removing all the nitrogen in the soil and given most lawns have no clover then you aint replacing it. Nitrogen is needed to produce chlorophyl which is needed for photosynthesis which is what makes the old grass greener on the other side.) and if the grass is growing then it will be using up water too so winner all right. Best of luck and yes my lawn is full of moss but just have not got round the dealing with it yet:)

had to do this as well. Moss was so bad i had to spread the 2 in 1 lawn feed & moss killer 3 times over the last few months and rake the dead moss out after. The lawn looks as patchy now. Spread a box of grass seed and rolled the garden but the grass seed hasnt take yet and its been about 2 weeks. Also cut back the tree that was shading the area.

Throw down some top soil onto the patchy areas then throw the seeds. This worked for me.

    or vice versa
at least roll/rake them so they have soil contact
they will also need to be kept moist until they germinate
    anything from 2-3 weeks
