Holy **** havent seen that in about 3 years.

Its one fo the 1st exploits in the messenger service. go to Windows Update and get everything its actually one of the 1st things you get, then run spyware AFTER you update.

ah, messenger spam. Nothing to worry about. Have you installed SP2?

Its a service that was origianlly designed for sys admins, but instead spammers have been using it to display messages usch as teh one you are getting. SP2 disables the messenger (not to be confiseed with MSN messenger) by default.

You can also disable the service manually under control panel\admin tools\services

Enable your firewall PRONTO. In fact, it might very well be too late. Update your AntiVirus software and run a full scan just in case - if you've been using that machine on the internet for more than 30 seconds without a firewall, you could easily have been infected by dozens of worms.

I can also see your little Windows Update icon there in your system tray - this means you're probably not even up-to-date on your patches!

Format and re-install,and run windows update straight away.
Or, download SP2 ('network distribution' .exe)... and run that, or better, make a slipstream install CD and do it...
Otherwise, start going through the other updates first and click 'show hidden updates' (or..previously hidden..or whatever the **** that option is)

To dissable the Messenger service open Administrative Tools and select services. Scroll down to Messenger and set it to Dissabled. That will stop that message from popping up. If you haven't got SP2 installed though your machine may be prone to all sorts of viruses.

Running a full virus and spyware scan after you get SP2 wouldn't be a bad idea either. Stinger is always a handy one to run too.

But at least you're using Firefox.

What "new" laptops come without SP2 these days?

I saw your screenshot, I see you have a new Laptop (I am presuming a Dell) The reason I am presuming is I saw the Mcafee icon on your desktop. Dell gives out Mcafee either as a trial (usually) or if you request it. I had mcafee and was overrun in less than three months. Quick format and re-install later and everything was hunky dory. I then used Norton 2003 before updating to 2005 from the Google Pack, Norton was ok but was system hungry and I reckon was missing a few bits here and there too.

Anyway IE got corrupted (not nortons fault might I add) around the end of March 06 and yet another Format & Re-install later and I am having the best stabilty in the system since I kept it completly offline for about a month back in the early days of 2005. I use AVG free and would recommend it. atleast you have taken the first steps to security with Firefox, My recommendations are Spybot - Search & Destroy, Ad-Aware SE Personal and of course AVG free. Check out the user aidan walsh in his signature is a good list of free or trial based software that will help keep the beasties out. Also scan with all the three I mentioned at least once a week or more if possible.

I presume you have the default Windows Firewall, if you have, turn it on (it's located in control panel). There are other free firewalls available also.

To those in the know, How effective is Windows Firewall ? or should it be taken with a pinch of salt and use one of the other available ones ??

Dell have being giving out SP2 for about a year at least, so I doubt it's them. Windows firewall didn't appear until SP2 either, and it's pretty crap. It only stops incoming threats and not outgoing, so if any spyware etc gets through, it will happily be able to download more onto your machine without any problems.

Actually, Windows has had a basic firewall in it since 2K, but it was hidden until XP, where it was off by default. SP2 just turns it on by default.
