I have a reasonably new computer (November 2005) built to my own specification. But the last two occasions i used the machine it suddenly turned off without warning.

    AMD Athlon 64 bit 3200+
    Windows XP Professional
    300GB Hard Drive
    2GB RAM
    NVidia GeForce 6600
    Multi-Format DVD Rewriter

Could it possible be the processor perhaps overheating

yes and no. There may be more to it. If you check your temps with Motherboard Monitor 5 or Smart Fan and see are they ok?

Also how long roughly does it take from boot til crash?

Something other than the CPU could be overheating indeed, but yeah give us the wattage and model of your PSU if you have it handy.

Take the side panel off your pc and place a normal fan aimed towards the cpu near it, if it still shuts off replace the power suplly, if that doesn't work it could be a motherboard problem.

Eh? Just take off the screws at the back, and take off the side panel. You can't break anything so don't worry.
On your PSU there'll be a sticker with various information, post up the wattage of it so it can be ruled out if it's not the problem..

If the computer is rebooting when you go on line you probably have a virus.

turn on pc, hold down del ,f1 or f10,look in bios ,do you see cpu,or mobo temps in advanced settings, or use motherboard monitor prog, free download, copy to cdr or usb drive,in netcafe, use philips to open pc,theres no danger, mobos only at 12volts approx, just see if fans are both working,is power supply fan working?open window ,post your location ,ie santry, maybe someone from boards.ie, will have a look at your pc.Psu wattage could be too low,or power cable on 1 fan,is loose.

If the PC's turning off immediately without any notice I'd say it's a heat or power issue. If you're getting some pop-up window in Windows giving you a countdown before shutdown then it's the good ol' Sasser virus or some variant.

Install Motherboard Monitor, post your temps. The chip temp is the crucial one.

have more of less the same prob on a m8's comp a while back.
and he has more or less the same specs u do.

what we did was use a hammer. it fixed it.
well no it didnt, but the computer didnt make any noise.

it turned out to be a ****ty PSU.
replaced it, and everything is fine now.
