Been lurking here for a month or two, wanted to experiment with the "free" Boyle Sports €10 to see if I could make a few quid on tips in a forum like this alone, with very little knowledge or experience of racing. The answer is no, but I had fun trying, so thanks to everyone for the tips and comments that were posted while I was hiding away. Here's a screenshot of my final statement, nasty as it is. :)

Ha Ha. Well done Ken, looks like you got a run for your money, unlike me who lost my free €10 in one go.

The problem with that Adam is that this is a free forum and everyone is entitled to post selections. If you blindly back tips from every Tom, Dick, and Harry then of course you're going to lose your money. The best way to use this forum is to learn from the posters who you think are talking sense. If someone posts a detailed analysis about why a horse might win then you should read it and see if you should agree with the poster or not.

The bottom line Adam is that it's very hard to make money from horse racing and there are very few people out there who can claim to be in profit. It's all about enjoying the sport and if you lose money, ensuring that it's an affordable loss.

Another thing I notice from that screen shot is that you were relying on some miracles...take today for instance, you backed a 14-1 shot to win...now fair enough that has happened on this forum on many occasion but it's not going to happen all the time. In this instance, it's always best to back the horse each way. Generally anything over 6-1 it's best to back each way. EDIT: I see you backed it to place too...apologies.

I'm certainly not going to convince you to continue backing horses because you seem like a level headed guy and your bets were modest and right for you. But how about using a mythical figure and pick and choose from what tips you see up here. After a while you'll see what works for you and you'll also find yourself learning more about the game so you can pick your own in future. Remember, some people know nothing about horse racing but still come on here and post tips.

Anyway, thanks for posting, I'm sure it will make interesting reading for some people.

@wbailey, if you look at the statement you'll see that I actually blew the €10 and the "free" €10 in my first two bets! I had to restart the experiment with another €10 cos I got greedy straight away. :)

@fade2black, although I did fire money at a few horses just out of sheer boredom or frustration, I did try to keep an eye on the forum. I generally avoided tips from 0-post users and monitored regulars like yourself for successes and failures. Unfortunately I was unlucky on both cases, because some of the big 0-post tips I noticed and decided not to back came in, and some of the dead-certs vomited their lungs up on the track for no reason whatsoever. But that's the way the world turns, I'm not going to cry about it.

Didn't I back that horse today each way? I'm pretty sure I did, and it came fourth. That was my last hurrah, €7.36 was all I had left and I'd gotten bored of sitting on it. I'll probably be back, I'm just going to give it a rest for a while and wanted to thank everyone for the craic I was sekritly having. :)

Why not put yourself the other end of the counter and start laying the horses. Its lots of fun too....get back get back :D

Also, I lost plenty of money at the start both backing and laying but the last 6 months Ive been making consistent profits and exceptional profits from laying so don't give up just yet.

For staking I use % bank - 5% of bank on each lay below 2/1 and 2.5% of bank on each lay above 2/1. For backing I use 0.5pt ew for > than 4/1 or 1pt win for < 4/1 where Ive a total start off bank of 30pts. Stake does not increase as profits increase.

You have to have extreme disipline to make money from horse racing. Keep experimenting and you will get there in the end.

Is that a lay stake of 5% (2.5%) of your bank or a lay with a liability of 5% (2.5%) of your bank?

    Why not?

Ken, if you are interested enough, there are those on this forum whom I am sure will be willing to guide you into making better bets.

    Why not?.

Lay stake for all except odds on shots - lay risk for odds on shots.

For the lays the stake does increase and decrease as the bank fluctuates.

For the backs the stake stays the same. Once I reach 15pts profit I withdraw this and start on 30pts again. I think increasing stakes after you have a winner is bad becaue its difficult to have consecutive winners so I do not like doingit.

Adam, I would recommend that you don't attempt to lay horses. At least for a good while anyway, until you learn...well everything there is to know about it. You could have a good 20 days laying and then lose all your profit on the 21st day with one semi big priced winner. It's not for the new comers, or the faint hearted.

Hadn't a notion of it fade2black, but thanks for the advice anyway.
