CPeople who copy stuff recks my head, more so when its shown to the public and nobody notices. I'm studying media Tv and Radio so i'll use this as an example:

First in Dublin: 98FMs Fugitive - "Find The Fugitive Win The Cash"
Copied By FM104: FM104s Joker - "Find The Card Win The Cash"

First in Dublin: 98FMs Famous Five - "Guess The Voices Win The Cash"
Copied By FM104: The Triple Decker - "Guess The Voices Win The Cash"

First in Dublin: 98FMs Fugitive 3 - "Find The Fugitive Win The Cash / Guess The Location Win The Cash" (SMS Only)
Copied By FM104: FM104's EAZY CASH - "Guess The Location Win The Cash"

Seriously The Marketing Departments are "Monkey See... Monkey Do!" and they get away with it! There is loadsa cases of this all around us but its weird that we never notice. Anyone else notice stuff like this? Maybe in your field?

PS: I am aware that every promotion every radio station does is just being copied from another from somewhere around the world (Fugitive from Austrailia).

Every promotion every radio station does is about guessing something and winning cash (fugitive, cash call, mystery family, etc etc etc).

Very True, But what i'm simply highlighting is not only the time between each competition but the many things that are similar in each. Also its the same station copying all the time. Anyway this thread dosnt only have to be about radio :D

This type of promotion (and others) have all been tried in the UK too. Every now and then something original comes along and everybody does their own take on it. Sometimes promotions are just flogged to the death.

Jesus.. the amount of times I've been stopped by random strangers in the street accusing me of being the fugitive...

F*ck off and get a life!

The only real difference is that FM104 manage to only give away a fraction of what 98FM give away.

98FM had the cash call where you had to say the number between 1 and 100 they had announced earlier. FM104 had a cash call where you had to guess what band or artist they had announced earlier. Bit of a difference in the odds between the two games.

A little of topic but I completely agree with OP - There is no imagination or originality left in the worlds of advertising and marketing. It is very rare to come across a good advert on the tv anymore and sometimes it actually makes me a little angry. I mean, how many debt consolidation, personal injury, mobile ringtones ads can you fit into 3 mins? And why are the always on Nickelodeon, what 6 year old has any use for these companies? Can companies only sell their products and promote their services by using celebrities? Trinny and Suzannah for Nescafe, Kerry Catona for Iceland etc.

    BUT, there are some exceptions.

These are some of my personal favourites:
    - The Citroen C4 ad with the dancing car, i thought it was compltely unique.
    - The VW Golf ad with Gene Kelly break dancing to a Singing in the Rain Remix was fantastic but then the feckin lotto had to go and ruin that by using the same thing!
    - 3's ad with the singing cherry had me in stiches!
    - ALL Honda ads
    - Xbox ads where theres a pretend shootout in an office etc
    - The new corrie ads!

Then there's the TV shows themselves! Strictly come dancing, dancing on ice, jigs and reels - come on! Survivor, shipwrecked, Celeb Love Island, Big Brother, The Farm, the Games, Celeb Big Brother, Super Nanny, Me or the Dog, Wife Swap, Pop Idol, X Factor, You're a star etc etc etc Can nobody write a decent script these days? There's just no creativity, every show is a copy of something. Jeeze, better stop the rant while I still can.

(PS My allegiance always has and always will lie with FM104 - no matter how much of a copy cat they are. The Strawberry Alarm Clock are in a league of their own. Oh, and I will ashamedly admit that I am a Big Brother fan :o )

    (!I feel better now!)

Yeah, The Mystery voice has been around for years in various guises. I remember my Mam listening to Ronan Collins on RTE1 when I was a kid and people still had to put answers on the back of a postcard :D

Copying is something that happens everywhere, look at all of the high-street shops, they're the same. Everyone is too afraid of being laughed at or standing out from the crowd to wear anything different so the shops just put out racks and racks of the same stuff. You do get the odd rail of something different but it's usually black trousers, denim jeans or combats.

Really? Isn't that against the law? Won't they get shut down? *cough*They didn't by any chance make any videos of this did they? Any good looking women?*cough*

That was a rip off from the tv show 'Spaced' and it's also been ripped off in a ketchup advert, a jean advert and in a series of station idents on the UK Living satalite channel.

I'm only in Prague this week.. I had the problem with the fugitive last week..

Altough 98fm does have an almost identical sister station here.

Denis O'Brien owns loads of stations over in eastern europe, so that probably explains it!

Right - so you don't like copycats, but you support FM104 "no matter how much of a copy cat they are"?? I see.....

And you also admit you like Big Brother, but you're ashamed of the fact. Why be ashamed of something you like?

You strike me as a sheep.

I love the Strawberry Alarm Clock - Colm and JimJim are legends and I certainly wouldn't hold them responsible for the competitions that 104 run . And yes, I am slightly ashamed of the fact I watch BB because it is load of nonsense but everyones got their vices! Im certainly no sheep!

    Of course not....

But why not be proud of the fact you like BB? Obviously you dont really think it's "nonsense", or you wouldn't watch it - you just hear other people slag it off, so that makes you ashamed to like it, for fear of what other people may think. That kinda seems a bit sheepish to me....

Anyone seen the clip of the guy in Howth pretending to be the fugitive? Friend of mine showed me the footage. It was from a few weeks ago and Howth summit was where the fugitive was presumed to be. The dude just walked arounf looking suss and then when a chick approached him and asked if he was the fugitive he said he was and out came the hidden camera man. She was told she had won €15,000. I felt so sorry for the poor girl. He even made her do a funny dance for the camera before she could claim the cash. Then he took her details and told her the station would call her at 5pm and have her live on air.
