    Doxycycline - usual dose = 100mg once daily - roughly €2.50 for 8 tablets, therefore roughly €22

    Malarone = atovaquone + proguanil formulation = roughly €30 for 12 tablets, usual dose = once daily => €175 for a 10 week course

    All prices from www.bnf.org and roughly converted to €

    Read the insert carefully and take the medicines as prescribed as some of them can have serious side effects which can become problematic and also if you miss doses, becomes ineffective.

    Also check very carefully what malaria zone you are entering as there are very different resistance patterns out there and changing countries (even if neighbours) can mean you need a different regimen.

    Also the best protection is to AVOID mosquitos rather than rely on anti-malarials. Take precautions as per the clinic/GP as to what to do if you have an unexplained fever after returning from a malaria zone.
