    Right, this sounds incredibly stupid, but how do I make my desktop wireless so I can use both the pc and laptop?

    I have no idea, I assume you plug modem into wireless router, but what do I need to then make my desktop able to connect to it?

    Do i need to put in certain settings? Will my laptop with wifi card automatically pick it up?

    Thanks...:o

    yea, basically its like this:

    modem -> router - - - -wireless -- - - - pc | laptop

    the router will probably need a little bit of configuration, but this can normally be done through a simple web interface, something like this will probably do you if you need wireless for your pc.

    if your modem/router is going to be quite close to the pc, you can always just connect the pc into the router using a network cable and use the laptop on wireless. (check to make sure the wireless router has ethernet ports too first!, like this one)

    Thanks kdouglas.

    My PC will be right beside the router, its mainly for laptop wireless I'd be getting the router. Does the wireless just act as a regular modem too so I just throw out my old modem? So its basically a regular modem which enables wireless access on laptops in the house? What I mean is, can I plug the router straight into my pc like a normal modem and use it like a normal modem, wireless aside?

    You can buy a modem combined with a wireless router in which case you can get rid of your current modem. Or you could buy just a wireless router and connect the modem to it, then connect PCs to router using ethernet or wireless.

    In this second case, normally you put the modem into bridge mode and let the router handle the connection (PPPoE) settings in place of the modem. The router will also be responsible for assigning ip adresses to the machines that connect to it.

    Look through wireless forum for more info.
